In this episode of Incorporating SuperPowers, host Justin Recla and Jill Chambers talk about how awareness for better health has an impact on your stress levels and add to PTSD. Jill, a retired Colonel, created the groundbreaking Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) program for the Army. This program was designed to measurably increase resilience for soldiers likely to face combat trauma and adversity. Join in now as Justin and Jill discuss the techniques for stepping away from social media and the negativity to develop better health. Are you ready to take on the challenge of improving your health to change your life?Â
verybody, this is Justin Recla with another episode of Incorporating SuperPowers. And folks, you’re in for a treat today, because my guest today is Jill Chambers. Jill is a really dear friend. We met her, and her husband Michael a couple of years ago now at CEO Space, and they are just two of the most remarkable people on the planet. Jill, in particular, I’m super excited to have her on the show today, because we’re going to be talking about awareness for better health. And I think that’s super important for entrepreneurs in the entrepreneur world, and Jill is an authority on this.Â
When I say she is an authority, she is the driving force behind why the military recognizes PTSD. She won’t take the credit for it, and she’s one of the most humble people on the planet, but it was the career path that we now have an understanding of what PTSD is, and that our troops, which is something dear, and near to my heart, and for Tonia as well, that this is such an important topic.
And what we’re going to be talking about today is it’s a little bit beyond PTSD, and it’s to help those that have PTSD. And it’s really about bringing in the awareness of having better health, and what that looks like for you. And so if you are a soldier or you have some form of PTSD, and you’re suffering from that, I encourage you to listen to this episode because information we’re going to bring forward is going to empower you to start taking some ownership for your left, and right limits of what’s creating a lot of stress in your life. So, Jill, thank you so much for being on the show today.
Yes, and I’m happy to be here.
The work that you’ve done in the world, and work that you continue to do in the world. And just the amazing gift that both you and Michael are to everywhere in every circle that you interact with is just awe inspiring. We knew immediately that when we connected, it was going to be just an instant click. So, please tell us what are you up to? What are you working on today, and what’s the importance? I normally hit you with three questions all at once. And what’s the importance of having awareness?
Well, as we talked about just a little bit earlier, actually, it’s fun getting older to really start to recognize these things. It’s just too bad I didn’t know this like 20 years ago when I was really in the military, and stressing myself out so much. But we talk about awareness, and it seems like such a simple word, but the way I’ve really incorporated it now, and what I share with the veterans that I work with, and their family members is really the awareness, not just physical but mental, social, emotional. It’s knowing, like you just said, your right, and left limits, your boundaries. What is it that you’re letting into your space, because everything out there is affecting you.
If you’re sitting in front of the TV, and watching the news, your stress level will just go up, and so monitoring that, and paying attention to what’s going in, and everybody has their own story about their lives, and what they’ve gone through, and who knows what triggers happen to just send your mind off on some tangent that you can end up ruminating over things, and it’s just such a deterioration on your health, your overall health, that can click on emotional, physical, mental, spiritual. So, being able to just step back at any given moment, and go, “Wait a minute. What’s, happening here, and who’s in my space in this doesn’t just feel quite right”, and to be able to just remove yourself, or if it’s really good energy, throw yourself into that.
More of it, right.

Exactly. That are bringing out these good things, and health for you to include food, that’s a big one too, that just all of that just so it’s easy to encapsulate awareness, but just encompassing it all has been so remarkable, and healthy for both Michael, and myself, and that’s what we’re sharing with veterans. The big key is, Oh, and again with our family members, but they have to want to, it’s that first major step.
There’s the big key right there. I know you see this all the time. We see it all the time, is that there are a lot of people that are stuck in their own suffering. They’re stuck in their own story. And to do anything beyond that to get the suffering to stop is scary. And so, you’re absolutely right. That first step is you have to be willing to change. So how do you work with people? How do you get people over that hump of showing them here’s what they’re doing, and here’s what can be done. How do you bring them to that awareness?
Everybody’s different. There’s no one way that fits all. But an interesting thing, a lot of times when Michael, and I are out, whether he’s speaking, or I’m speaking, it’s always brought up in these events that I work with veterans and help with post-traumatic stress, and we have these tools, and I’ll get family members, mostly family members, that’ll come up, and my son, my grandson, I have a neighbor, and my question always is, “Are they ready? Do they want to?” And most of the time the answer is “No”, but you can’t push this on people either. So, I’m happy to give my card, and just because there’s an easy way to go look on my website, and see I’m just a regular, normal person. You’re not going to see a doctor, anything smooth.
You’re scared that there’s an opportunity to look, and see, “Hey, there’s some resources here. And wait a minute, she’s giving these out for free, and she’ll stick with me, and coach me, and help me.” And it’s so that really brings it together. And whenever I meet people like this that are offering that someone needs help, and I throw it out there to the universe, “If this is meant to be then let’s guide them towards me. I’m not chasing after people.” I tried that early on when I was working, I was starting disabled vet. And at the beginning it was just throwing out guided imagery CDs, or buying people Fitbit’s or helping them get coherence with their brain, and their heart, and all this stuff was leaving the home. But I never would never hear from him again.
So he didn’t know how things were going and chances are it just went in drawer. So, I’m very aware when I find those that are, they’re ready to be helped is where I’m most effective, when someone’s ready. And boy when I latch onto veterans, or family members that are really saying, “Okay, I want to get healthy. There are things I need to know, please help.” Then I have a toolkit of things that we start out with the find out is it the physical piece, are you really working on gaining relief from stress, and I can provide those tools. So, that’s how I get to people. I’m not chasing, but we’re out there to let the universe offer people into my life.
Well, it’s such a great way of going about doing things. I think if more businesses did that, we refer to it as pool marketing, right? You put yourself out there, you share your brilliance with the world, you connect with those, and those that are attracted to you, will just be pulled into it rather than pushing it out, pushing out, and buy my stuff, buy my stuff, buy my stuff. You show up, you do your work, you expand out, and those that you need to attract come find you, and folks, if you’re a family member that is in a situation like that. And you’re seeing somebody in your life that is struggling with PTSD, or wants to change, reach out to Jill, and have a conversation because so oftentimes those family members are the first step for somebody getting help, right?
Right. They feel the safest with them, sure.
Exactly. So, to that point, the family member then becomes a tool for helping the person that is suffering change. This is super, super fun stuff. This is, and I know before the show we were talking about structure. How much do you think structure, or lack of the structure has an impact on your overall health from day to day life? Whether it be time to work out, time to work, or time to watch movies, how important is that?
I think structure is so powerful. It really is. You get things done that way, and it doesn’t have to be been at by minute, but there’s places in your day where you can have some just quiet meditation time, or it’s your physical activity, or it’s a period when you’re going to watch TV, and be careful about what you watch. If you’re going to watch stuff that’s going to get your adrenaline going, or just take you places that you don’t really need to be going. Dark, spooky, scary places. Your body doesn’t know whether it’s really happening, or not. So, everything about those stressful moments that you see on television, your body’s creating cortisol can cause you to lose sleep, to gain weight, blood pressure goes up, and once stress his just, there’s a myriad of terrible things that could just start to happen to deteriorate your body.
So, in structured there, and aware of, “Okay, what are these good things I can do during the day?” And it can start out little things. You don’t have to accomplish a huge structure, in a day, or two you can take on little things. You can tell whether it’s food, or exercise or sleep. Just smart, smart structure stuff will keep you accountable. And once you’re accountable, you have responsibility, and actually have, you can empower yourself without others taking that away from you.
This is perfect, when we get back, we’re going to go down that rabbit hole a little bit further. I want to talk about some things about how those little steps can go a little bit further. So, before we go on break, Jill, where can our listeners go find you?
Yeah. My website is this, This Abled Vet. This. Not disabled, but Thisabledvet.com
