Frank Sell engages in spiritual warfare in everything he does. As the founder of Armored Up Man he sheds light on what it means to be a man living in today’s world. As the creator of Baby Beard Club he counters the over-machismo, fake masculinity concepts of marketing while showing the world the true power of the beard. Listen in as Frank joins host, Justin Recla, as they discuss everything from entrepreneurship to marriage and how to navigate the world as an armored up man.
Hey everybody, this is Justin Recla, your host of Incorporating SuperPowers. And I’m super excited to bring my guest on here today. If you’re watching the video, you can see him here over on the side. Kind of looks like a guy from ZZ Top, right?
But real first, I just want to give a quick shout out to our show sponsor crypto wealth coach, Seth Maniscalco. If you haven’t checked them out, give his stuff a look. This show is being brought to you in part because of Seth’s sponsorship. Great guy, good stuff.
But now I want to get onto the exciting stuff. Because, gentleman that I’m having on my show today is a guy that I’ve known for, I don’t know, three or four years now. He’s definitely one of my spiritual brothers in the battle of doing things better. The battle of doing things differently.
And today we’re going to be talking about spiritual warfare, and it’s just my honor to have my good friend Frank Sell, the founder and creator of Baby Beard Club on the show with us today. Frank, thanks for joining us.
Hey Justin. Man, I just can’t say enough good things about … I mean, you guys are family. You, your wife and Eva, everybody. It’s just my pleasure to be here, and I’m super honored for you to have me on the show.
Well, I love the space where we connect, brother, and I appreciate that. This is … I think you and I kind of meet in this intersection of husband and wife, and spiritual warrior, business owner, and just out there trying to make the world a better place.
We’ve done a lot of different talks together before in the past and I’m just, I’m super excited to have you on this new show. Because there’s a lot of good that you’re putting out into the world, and I’m excited to be able to share that with our listeners.
So, before we dive into the meat and potatoes here, tell us a little bit about Baby Beard Club. Where did the idea come from? What’s it about, and what’s the driving force behind it?
You know, it goes back, really, my whole life. My dad was self-employed, and when I decided I didn’t like the long term vision of having a job, I started my own business 16 years ago. Literally, like I say, I bought a 100 dollar Video Street and beat the damn street so hard; I swear I’ll get a bill for a pothole someday.
Just, bless the level of ignorance to not know I shouldn’t do some stuff, just go out and do it. But that’s … It’s been successful. Very successful in my eyes, my terms. And one thing I realized though, is just how fragile … I mean, when you talk about the manscape, man-space … I’m a husband, I’m a father, and I realized how fragile that existence is. I literally make my money as long as my hands are moving.
Because it’s a trade, which takes hell damage on cars. And so all the time I make money is when my hands are working. And something as simple as breaking my pinky could knock me out of the game.
And so I realized, I need to have some kind of assurance. We all have insurance on everything, our house, our cars, and our phones, everything. But assurance is playing offense instead of playing defense. And so I got into the network marketing and MLM stuff. And when … It’s kind of like what the Bible talks about.
You know, to be grateful in all circumstances. I mean, yeah, that was. Everybody knows that’s a struggle. It’s a hustle to try and build something like that. But it opened so many avenues to me, and one of the biggest avenues was to know who’s thinking, I’m thinking, to learn myself.
And so I took the things that I learned from that, and realize, I started my business 16 years ago on the idea of the feeling, I wanted freedom. I wanted to be able to control my destiny. And so I’ve just taken these things that I’ve learned, and that’s one of the things about passive income or residual income, or ways to make money while you sleep.
And so I was like, man, I tried all the ways everybody kind of … The easy ways. I guess it’s not so easy. But the network marketing stuff, like, wait a minute, there’s business ownership, that’s where I am. And so that’s, I’ve been trying some stuff and I was like… And just very grateful to have so many talented people around me to finall, they’re like, “Hey knucklehead, you’ve got this really good idea.”
And so I had seen the landscape of beards, and kind of the manhood, brotherhood mantra. And I looked at what I was seeing on Facebook and the internet. And so many of these beard clubs are bearding. It’s all fake machismo. It’s all a fake brotherhood. It’s all transactional type deal.
I literally thought, “Man, what is the complete opposite of that?” And I was like, “Well, every beard starts out as a baby beard.” And it’s like, I went to GoDaddy and I typed in Baby Beard Club and it was available for 99 cents, so I just bought the domain. And that was 2016.
And it was about 2017 I actually started to grow a beard. Rephrase that, I quit shaving.
Well, let’s be honest here, because for those of you who don’t know Frank, he’s about as baby-faced as you could think of, without that man-shield that he’s wearing right now. He’s got this big man-shield, I think it’s made a Kevlar, but it’s soft because of the oils and stuff. But I’m telling you what; you were about as baby-faced as they come.
It’s a gift and a curse.
So yeah, we saw that and thought, you know what, I told my wife one day because I’d never grown out my facial forest. And I told her, I said, “Hey, I think I want to let it grow, but I have a couple spots I don’t… Never really grow in very well.”
And my wife, being the awesome homemaker that she is, she’s really traditional and she likes to make all of our stuff. Our home, our body wash, laundry detergent, everything she can make from scratch, she does. So she says, “Hey, you know what? No worries. I make this homemade eyelash growth serum. I’ll just change it a little bit and make it into a beard oil.”
So what happened next was totally unexpected. I slept really well the first night I used it.
And so from my experiences with being in business for 16 years, being on the internet marketing space and the network marketing, I said, “Wait a minute, there’s a way to combine two really big things, the essential oil market and the beard oil market.”
And it’s what I call a facial diffuser. So what happened was, the essential oils that were in the beard are actually known to help you sleep. And so I asked her, I said, “What else would these things do?” And so she started rattling these things off.
And I kind of, I’m kind of witty with my words and stuff a lot of times. And so I come up with some catchy names, and I have some just ungodly talented people around me to make it look like a multimillion dollar product, even though it’s a multi-dollar business still.
It’s growing there, though. But you know, and folks, this right here, this right here, this beautiful thing that I got on my face, that’s because of his stuff.
My favorite is Get Shit Done. That is by far my favorite oil at all. I wake up, get ready for the day, put a little of the into the … It just spices things up. And I get that’s crazy, but if you’re a guy, you’re going to get what I’m talking about when you buy some Get Shit Done. It is bam. It’s like, boom, you’re there, you’re awake, you don’t need coffee. It’s good to go.
Yeah, it’s just totally silly to me. I mean, I see so many guys like, aw man, it smells like whiskey barrel or tobacco this, or vanilla that. And I’m like, come on dude. But the other thing that, with you and me and the spirituality, and kind of understanding of the bigger picture, actually, the weekend that you and I met was at a social media entrepreneur event.
And I saw some of these other social media influencers and stuff, and I kind of got a little taste of their stories and their backgrounds. And I know my personal story, and I just kind of like … Oh, holy shit man. I’ve been gifted with a really, really powerful story of overcoming. You know, nearly losing my marriage and just having some horrible things happen within my family that no man, no family wants to go through.
But yet, I was really given the gift to go through this and lead through this. And I was equipped, and so I’m sitting in the bleachers at this event, and I’m like, “Okay, there’s … This event this guy called his thing this, this guy calls his thing that.”
So again, I go off to GoDaddy and I look up … I said, “You know, I feel like I’ve been equipped with armor. All the stuff that I’ve been through is meant to equip me, not whip me. And so I feel like I’ve been built with armor.” And so I just go to GoDaddy, and I typed in ArmoredUpMan, and it’s available. So right there I said, “Okay, here, I have this business that I have no sense, no business doing, but it’s kind of like it’s in front of me.”
The only thing I can do is speak, and my wife is the genius that knows all the oils, and this other person’s a genius and knows how to make it look really good. And this other guy’s really good at the websites and stuff.
And all I have is a store; I can kind of talk a little bit. So I see that here I had this business that I can market to men, and I had this purpose that I want to help equip men. And I want to help men understand who’s thinking, you’re thinking, and dig into themselves, not just repeat the same year over, and over, and over, and over.
I was like, “I think God’s putting something in front of me here, and I better put some effort behind this.” And so that’s when I was like, “You know what, let’s go ahead and run with this as we still do our main traditional business, because that feeds everything else.” But we’re also putting energy and effort into growing this other business while still living life.
And I want to stop right there, because this is a great segue into the rest of the story. And we’re going to get into really; this is the essence of that spiritual warfare, the purpose of this talk here. And so, if you’re just joining us, I’m talking to Frank Sell, the founder and creator of BabyBeardClub.Com, and the founder of ArmoredUpMan, doing some great things out in the world. Frank, before we go on break, where’s the best place people can go find you?
