Reconciliation
While the escalation phase amplifies awareness, the real movement forward is in the reconciliation phase. This can feel weird and disconcerting for different reasons. Sometimes it feels like missing out or having to give up something. In reality, neither of these is true, but the perception of lack tends to permeate these dialogues. The key is to create solutions that promote a win-win-win type of ideology and culture.Â
However, in order for these real and viable solutions to actualize, the process of escalation must be allowed to run its course. While uncomfortable and possibly combative, moving completely through the emotions and upsets from previous experiences sets the stage for communication and understanding. This is a cornerstone for any viable solution to encompass the vast diversity of thought inherent when groups come together.Â
Don’t miss this final message in the Across the Divide IM Series where Tonya Dawn Recla and Dondrell Swanson share some of the amazing results from a challenging and highly rewarding experience guiding the senior administration of a major university through conflict resolution and reconciliation, impacting the Arizona State University culture for years to come.
