Justin Recla:

Welcome back to Incorporating Superpowers. My guest today is Mamie Kanfer Stewart. She is the CEO and founder of Meeteor. They are an organization that’s helping businesses perfect their meeting strategies. And this is something that I think is extremely vital for the effectiveness and efficiency of running a business, the less time you can actually spend in a meeting, the more you can actually get to creating and connecting, but meetings aren’t just about checking the box. They’re about connecting in that creative space and allowing everybody to be felt heard. And so I’m excited because maybe he comes from an entrepreneurial background. She’s done business with their family, and that resonates and rings so true with my heart because that’s the way we do things here at Super Power Experts with our family. Mamie welcome to the show.

Mamie Kanfer Stewart:

Thank you so much for having me today, Justin.

Justin Recla:

So you got quite the backstory. Tell me more about Meeteor, how did you leave your come about?

Mamie Kanfer Stewart:

Yeah, I love the story, because it’s one of those kinds of you have that, like hit you over the head moment. So after college, I was trying to figure out what to do with my life and ended up working in the nonprofit sector for a bit. And was really shocked by how poorly these organizations were run. After coming from coming out of this family business and getting a chance to really see the inside of a really effective organization, I can’t believe that not every organization is run this way. And that led me to start a start media. First, just as an organization that was focused on helping manage managers helping organizations collaborate effectively. And I didn’t get a ton of traction, to be honest. But I started having conversations with people about meetings, and just kind of, you know, randomly bringing up that we help people collaborate, we help people manage projects. And inevitably, whenever I would mention meetings, I would get the most amazing stories of how terrible this person’s meetings had been. It was like clockwork, every single person I spoke to had an example, if not from that week, or definitely from that week, if not from that day of some meeting that they sat in, that was so unengaging, that was such a waste of their time. And I thought, wow, this is a really big problem. And once I went down that path, it was very clear that this is where I wanted to spend my time to help organizations solve the meeting problem, which to me is the biggest problem that businesses face today.

Justin Recla:

Agree it’s not just businesses, I would say government as well, coming from the government sector, I know that I’ve been gone a while, but I’m fairly certain that things haven’t really changed much in the government sector. Meetings can be one of the most painful things if not run properly. So what’s the secret sauce? What is it that you that makes it makes it work?

Mamie Kanfer Stewart:

Well, the number one thing, and there’s lots of stuff we can get into but the number one thing if everyone listening only remembers this one thing, remember this, you have to start by asking yourself the question, What will this meeting accomplish? We tend to ask, instead of that, we tend to ask, why are we having this meeting? And the answer tends to be a verb, to discuss, to review, to plan to check in to do all of these things, which are great activities, but they don’t tell you at the end of the meeting, how we will have moved our work forward, what will be different, it’s nice to have a discussion. It’s nice to have a check-in. But what’s the reason that you’re doing that? What’s that next level that reason? And that’s what we say is the desired outcome, you have to figure out what your desired outcome is, and what will the meeting accomplish. And once you know, what the outcome of the meeting will be, all the other pieces can start to fall in place in terms of who should be there, what activities you should do to engage participants, what things they can do to prepare ahead of time, and so on.

Justin Recla:

Fantastic. And, folks, this is super, super important.
