Hiring Right

What is the significance of hiring right for the business? Do all companies find the hiring process as a crucial part of employee development? In this episode of Incorporating Superpowers, host Justin Recla and guest Mac Prichard talk about the proper recruitment process and education for both employee and employer. Mac is the founder of Mac’s List, an online job search directory. His main goal is to serve small businesses wanting to hire right in one shot. Tune in and learn more about the importance of employees to the company and why they should be trained and educated.

Justin Recla:

Welcome back to Incorporating Superpowers. Today we’re going to talk about one of the topics that I know a lot of business owners, entrepreneurs, and start-ups don’t like to discuss, and that’s the concept of hiring. More importantly, we’re going to be talking about hiring right. How do you hire right in today’s world? You may not have a full HR team, you may not be fully experienced in doing interviews, you may not really understand the whole hiring process of what goes into bringing on an actual employee into your business.

That’s why I’m super excited about my guest today, Mac Prichard. He’s the founder and creator of Mac’s List. It’s a job board that not only services employees looking for businesses but, more importantly, services small businesses who are looking to get their feet wet in the hiring right process. Mac, welcome to the show today.

Mac Prichard:

Well, thanks for having me, Justin.

Justin Recla:

This concept of hiring right, Mac, is one that I know has plagued entrepreneurs and business owners from the get-go. Not everybody’s a skilled interviewer, not everybody has HR experience.  So, what is Mac’s List and how can it serve small businesses in hiring right?

Mac Prichard:

We’re a regional job board. We’re based in Portland, Oregon, Justin, and we serve employers and job seekers in Oregon and Washington. What distinguishes us from the other many great job boards out there is our focus, not only on providing job postings to readers and connecting employers with our large audience of readers, but we also recognize that many employers struggle with hiring. Particularly the small and medium-sized companies that may not have an HR person on board.

Usually, the cutoff is about 20-25 people. When employers reach that number, they typically add an HR director.  But, until they do they’re relying on their own staff to find candidates, interview them, and onboard them. Because the people doing this were often hired for a technical or management skill, they haven’t been formally trained in how to do recruitment and how to find the best candidates and provide the best experience for applicants. That can lead to a lot of frustration.

So, at Mac’s List, we not only post jobs, but we also provide lots of free content for employers about how to hire smarter and better. We also do the same for candidates too about how to improve their job search skills, but I know our focus today is on employers.

Justin Recla:

So, I know Mac’s List has been around for a little while. In the time that you’ve been up and serving your clients and so forth, what would you say is the number one issue small businesses have when it comes to hiring?

Mac Prichard:

Finding the right candidates. I think it’s so important because, as you know, you run a business and your listeners do as well, it’s the people that can make all the difference. If you’re not trained in how to both find interviews and select these folks, you can end up with, through no fault of your own, a match that’s just not right. That’s not good for the company and it’s not good for the candidate. Nobody wants that.

Justin Recla:

No.

Mac Prichard:

So, the good news is that hiring is a skill. You can learn how to do it, you can teach yourself or your team, and you can also turn to paid consultants too until you add that HR director.

Justin Recla:

That’s fantastic. So, I know that your board services mainly the Northwest, but what does Mac’s List have to offer other businesses that may not necessarily be located in the Northwest?

Mac Prichard:

Our content about how to hire smarter and better works anywhere, Justin. It’s geographically neutral. So, the majority of our visitors to our website are actually outside the Pacific Northwest.  We even attract a large number of readers, and we have a weekly podcast about a job search so also a lot of listeners, from outside the United States as well.

So, if you’re looking to find candidates in Oregon and Washington, we have a job board, and if you’re looking for remote workers, check out the site and let’s talk.  And if you’re not looking to hire someone to work remotely, but want advice about how to hire better, we have a whole section of our website devoted to employers with free content about how to do that.

Justin Recla:

That’s fantastic. What I love about what the pandemic’s done for businesses is that you might be able to find a candidate that’s based in the Pacific Northwest, and you might be on the East Coast or you might be even in another country and still be able to find a candidate because the concept of working virtually has been standardized through this whole 2020-2021 pandemic that we’ve had. I think that’s absolutely brilliant. The fact that you’re educating business owners and employees on how to hire right and find the right employer is absolutely brilliant.

Mac, before we go on break, where can people go find more information about you?

Mac Prichard:

Visit our website, macslist.org, and I also encourage listeners to connect with me personally on LinkedIn. Be sure to mention that you heard me on Justin’s show so I know where you came from, and I would love to have a conversation with you there too.

Justin:

Fantastic. Folks, go take a look at Mac’s List, see what they’re doing. If you’re having issues with hiring, you don’t know how to hire or you’re looking for the right employee, this is the place to start. Go take a look at Mac’s List and check it out.
