How do artists use their creative flow to create something that’s worthy of winning not just one, but two Grammy awards? In this episode of Cosmic Consciousness, Jewels Arnes is joined by two-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum seller, pianist, and composer Peter Kater to talk about his process when creating his music. Peter shares that the best way to succeed in what you do is to say yes to your creative process, to your creative instincts, and not second guess yourself. Join Jewels and Peter in today’s episode to discover how following your creative flow and intuition will lead you to your desired path.

Blessings, soul family. This is Jewels with Cosmic Consciousness: Coding the New Human for the New Earth. I am thrilled about our guest today. Peter Kater is a two-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum seller, pianist, composer. He is just the coolest guy, and we were just talking before we get on, and we’re just like, “Let’s just go deep.” So we’re just going to go deep into the creative flow process, and I’m going to turn it over to Peter and just tell us something about you that people wouldn’t maybe know.

You told me that you’re going to ask me this question, so I’ve gone across the board to say, “Should I tell them that I’m a sushi and sake lover, that I am obsessed with that? Or should I tell them that in my mind, when I go inside, there’s just this huge expanse of nothingness that I sometimes feel uncomfortable in, but ultimately it’s where all my creativity comes from?” But I often think that people would be amazed if they knew how empty I was.

I love that. And I feel the same way. I’ve never had anyone say it in that way, but I have that same experience often. And the same thing happens for me when my creativity comes through, so let’s take that lead, Peter, and you are an amazing musician, composer. I mean, this comes from somewhere, so tell us a little bit about what that process is for you.

Well, it’s interesting because I’m working on a new album right now, and I always find the creative process just fascinating every single time. This is probably my 70th album. I’ve written over 1,000 compositions, but every single time I start a new project, I’m like, “Wow, this is so interesting.” It’s so amazing and new. Stuff just happens. I know that it’s time to work on a new project. I don’t know what it is yet, but then I started gradually getting ideas of, “It should have a little bit of this, or it should have a little bit of that,” but I don’t go to the piano until all of a sudden, there’s this sense of I hear that, and I hear something. And it’s a very distinct difference between just stuff going on in my head.

All of a sudden, there’s something different going on. And so then I started working on this record literally only three weeks ago, I think, and within the first week, I had mapped out 15 new compositions in one week. It was just three days, sometimes. And it’s always fascinating because I’ve been doing this my whole life. I don’t know exactly where it comes from, but I trust that it’s coming. And, I show up. I show up. When the signal goes green, when I’m feeling the inspiration is happening, I say, “Yes.” That’s for me, that is a huge part of it.

You say yes to your creative process, to your creative instincts. You don’t second guess yourself. I don’t second guess myself. I don’t go, “God is that really the right transition, or is that really the right chord, or ” I just say, I say, “Yes, yes, yes, yes,” and I just follow the breadcrumbs, follow the intuition, follow the instinct. And every time it’s amazing. I don’t even take credit for it. It’s more like I just look at it and go, “Wow, it’s happening again. That’s incredible.”

I always tune in to those that are listening, and it’s such a beautiful reflection on how we live life as well. So that would be my next question is, does your creative process and that intuition and saying yes and trusting in it flow into your personal life?

Optimize Your Life!

Well, it’s a very good question because I’ve often said that in my personal life if I use the same trust and instinct and ease as I do in my creative process, my life would be transformed. Now I can’t say it would be completely transformed because I do that a lot already. But to be honest with you, I think in my personal life, I don’t know, anywhere from 20 or 30 years to a couple of lifetimes behind.

Well, at least you’re honest about it, but I love how you recognize that you do it at times. And I want to go into that more when we come back from break. So we’re just going to go into a quick break and just come back and dive in and just let the interview flow. But before we do, Peter, if somebody wanted to hear your music or connect to you, how would they find you?

Well, I’m easy to find. You just really need to Google my name, and everything comes up. But my website is peterkater.com. And I’m on Instagram and Facebook and all the social media things.

Beautiful. And YouTube. I Googled your name and listened to some of your stuff on YouTube which is really fun to do as well. So I invite everyone to do that as we close this interview a little later, but we’ll go to break, and we’ll be right back.
