Justin Recla:
All right, but welcome back to Incorporating Superpowers. Today we’re going to Well, it could say you we’re going to be looking ahead. Look Ahead Marketing is actually what we’re going to be looking at today even more specifically, we’re going to be talking about joint venture launches. And what does that even mean? In the marketing space? My guest today is the CEO of Look Ahead Marketing, James Lam. I am super excited to dive into this because James is a little bit different. He thinks as I do in acronyms. He got an acronym out of his name. We do everything in acronyms because of our military. So this is gonna be a lot of fun in dissecting this conversation around lookahead marketing, and what joint venture launches, what those are, what that looks like, and how you could leverage it for your business. James, welcome to the show.
James Lam:
Thanks, my friend. It’s great to be here.
Justin Recla:
This is good stuff. So looking ahead, let’s start with look ahead marketing before we dive into the joint venture stuff, looking at marketing, why look at marketing?
James Lam:
Well for those of you who recognize Justin already related, you’re talking about the name right, Justin, and let me talk about that for a second. So look at his marketing, my last name is Lam, Lam with no B, like Mary Had a Little Lamb, but there’ll be B at the end, right? And so growing up, so okay, I’m going to relay something you talk about, you know, incorporating your superpowers, right? And one of the things that I help people do online coaches and online healers are really be themselves. One of the things I needed to talk about, like when I first started, the business was, you know, I had this paradigm around my last name, being a funny name, you know, in school, you can imagine, I get made fun of all the time and things like that. And I said, you know, I need to have something, or I rock it. And I am proud of myself. And that’s the reason why I forced myself to create a name like a lamb, Look Ahead Marketing. And that’s what we do now. Every single time we get on the show every single time we do a summit anytime, any information goes about lookahead marketing, it’s always LAM, capitals, bold and front, and then hyphen Look Ahead Marketing. So that’s a little backstory behind the name, Justin.
Justin Recla:
Fantastic, fantastic. And so I get asked, how long have you been in the marketing space?
James Lam:
Well, I’ve been in the marketing space for a number of years now. So I actually used to own a digital marketing agency. And we can, you know, we owned it for about three years before we sold it. And now I’ve you know, we were talking about what more bricks and mortar, you know, service-based industries inside that digital marketing. You see, now we only work with online healers and coaches, because I find it more fun. I find there are tons of opportunities. And I just like the people I work with.
Justin Recla:
It’s a phenomenal industry as well and worthwhile promoting because there are a lot of people out there doing a lot of good. Helping a lot of people in different ways in your approach, I’m sure is something that well, we’re going to dive into further on the back end of the conversation. But I want to hit this point upfront because you and I were talking about this prior to the break of like, coaches wanting to try to mirror or model themselves after somebody else that they’re seen online can be more of a detriment to their business, and you help encourage people to just be themselves what does that mean? What does that look like for a coach who’s stepping out into the marketing space?
James Lam:
That’s a huge question. And one of the interesting so I live this for a while just I’m going to tell a story. I live this for so long like I live this and I remember there’s a couple of giants in my space and you might have heard of them, Russell Brunson. One of the big guys, right, who does funnels, and one of them’s Amy Porterfield, who does digital courses. And, you know, I remember buying Russell Brunson audiobook and listening to Amy Porterfield talk about webinars that convert, and I remember the very first we call it launches. So the very first time I tried to sell a product to an online group who had no idea who I was, and honestly, I didn’t really know who I was. And I remember doing slide-by-slide. And I could just hear Russell and Amy in the background, you know, you know, instead of myself, and that one didn’t do very well. And so I ended up hiring a coach and figuring out what I stood for. And I remember one of the very first again launches that I did, where I did it myself and where I routed like it was genuinely me. We ended up scoring about $17,300. Now, in hindsight, it doesn’t sound very much now, right? But back in the day, it was more money than I had seen in so long. And one of the things that I promised myself was, regardless of what happens, I will be unabashedly proudly myself. It doesn’t matter how it goes, it matters that I do my best and throw everything at the wall. And when I did that, that’s when I found success and that’s what I try to help other people with. Right? We read all bucks we see all the motifs, you know, if you, if you think about adjusting, you know, we hear all about hustle and grind, you know, sacrifice all the time we hear about, you know, there are the ads of people walking by private boats taking a private jet, I have to be these people to look like I’m really a big deal. And realistically, the only thing you have to do to find success is being yourself, build the business, build the marketing, build the message around you, and your best gift.
Justin Recla:
Oh, so smart. This is something that we saw on the due diligence side of the house when we had our corporate counterintelligence business. We sold that in 2002 and 2020. But that was one of the things that we would look at for how a program promotes itself because I’m not Russell Brunson. You’re not Russell Brunson. How do you be Russell Brunson, when the only system that’s being promoted is duplicating what they’ve already done? It doesn’t allow for room for your own uniqueness. Because it’s a very specific model. And that works for some people, right? But I love the fact that your table goes, yeah, that works for some people. And if you want it to work for you have to be you folks, that is the key here Be yourself, James, this is good stuff. I feel like that like you and I can talk about that and dissect that for weeks on in just in that, that problem set alone. But I look forward, to bigger and better and how people can move into the marketing space bigger, better for themselves by being themselves. And I want to touch base on this. Before we go into the break I want you to if you give me a 100,000-foot view, we’ll go to the 50,000-foot view I’ve got a break. But give me the 100,000-foot view of this joint venture launch for coaches and healers. What is that?
James Lam:
Oh, I love it. It’s one of my favorite tools in the world. So when you first start, a lot of people are trying to use Facebook ads, a lot of people are trying to use YouTube ads high-risk high money high, you can lose a lot of money doing it right? The joint ventures allow you to borrow the credibility platform and contacts of other people so that you can do your dog and pony show so to speak, in front of eyeballs, who are your ideal clients, and only pay when you find the client.
Justin Recla:
This is good stuff. Folks, that’s a teaser for you. That is a teaser for you to stick around. We’re going to talk about this a little bit more on the backside of this conversation. But James, before we go on break, where can people find more information about you?
