Kids Talk – Self Love

Why is self love important for children? How can we teach our kids to value themselves? In this episode of Superpower Mommas, host Tatiana Berindei and guest Neva Lee Recla talk about self-love and how to commence uncomfortable conversations with our children. As depression is becoming more rampant in this era of social media, teaching the youth of one’s worth is one of the essential ways to avoid such dilemmas. Tune in to know how to avoid saying inadvertent discouragements that keep our children away from self love.

Neva Lee Recla:

Thank you so much. I’m really excited about this topic. And I love recording with you and talking about the conversations I think are a little bit, dare I say, scary to some people, and being able to connect the dots between the adult and the kid world, because there are some people out there who don’t really know how to have these conversations. So I think it’s cool that we get to have them and open the doorway.

Tatiana Berindei:

Me too. And I’m so grateful to you for opening that doorway with me. I think this wouldn’t happen if we weren’t doing it together. So thank you for being that light and putting your hand on the knob and opening the door. So let’s talk about it, I mean, you’re the one who’s guiding these topics, so why did self-love feel like an important one for you to bring forward today?

Neva Lee Recla:

I think it felt so important for me just because I’ve seen a lot of the people I know, some of my friends especially, struggling with the whole concept of self-love. Especially those who were brought up in environments where they don’t necessarily fit in all of the boxes of the environment, so then the concept of self-love for them is different from what it would be for the people who do fit in those boxes. And I think it’s just so important to be able to show people how to have that real love and respect for themselves, and also show them how to do the same for others because I think at the heart of it, that’s all that matters is our love for ourselves, each other and the divine. So I think building those relationships with ourselves is a really important way and a good way to start.

Tatiana Berindei:

I couldn’t agree more. And I think you’ve hit on something really powerful because I think most people actually don’t know how to have these conversations with their kids. And it’s kind of this cyclical thing, because how do you teach your children’s self love if you aren’t in the practice of it already, right?

Neva Lee Recla:

Yeah, exactly.

Tatiana Berindei:

It hasn’t landed for you as an individual who is parenting, how on earth can you pass it on to your children? And before we go further down into that conversation, let’s just talk for a minute about what we mean when we say self-love.

Do you want to speak to that a little bit?

Neva Lee Recla:

Yeah, so I think well, self-love I think is at the basics, it starts at the whole stopping the self-deprecation. But I think it goes deeper than that, I talk a lot about seeing others as a part of the divine and as deserving of love from the divine and from spirit as anybody else is. But I think it connects back to seeing yourself like that too because it’s really easy to go and love other people and see their perfections and their flaws and love them because of all of it, but when it comes to yourself, it’s so easy to let the stories and stuff get in the way and to judge. And so I think in the spiritual space that we’re in, it connects to seeing yourself as part of the divine and seeing yourself as deserving of the love from the divine.

Tatiana Berindei:

Absolutely. I couldn’t agree more. And it is a challenge for people. I mean, you see that a lot in our programs, if you’re listening to this and you have not yet either joined the superpower universe and come and play with us in there, or attract our programs, this is what we do. So if you’re listening to this right now and you’re like, “Oh my God, this is landing so deep. How am I going to teach my kids self love? I can’t even perfect it for myself. I need help,” please, please, please, come over and look at our programs, because that is what we do and that is what we excel at.

I mean, you have in front of you an amazing, how old are you now Neva? 12?

Neva Lee Recla:

I’m 12.

Tatiana Berindei:

Okay, great. A 12-year-old who’s able to so articulately talk about these things, is a big part because of who your parents are and how you were raised, right?

What do you think your experience would be like if you didn’t have the parents that you had? I mean, I know it’s kind of impossible to answer, but just looking at your kids. Maybe a better way to ask it is how much of a part do you think your parents have played in your ability to love yourself versus some of your friends?

Neva Lee Recla:

Yeah, I think they’ve put a really huge part in it, and it doesn’t mean that I always find myself perfect and that I don’t have those struggles myself, but at least they’ve helped me see that I’m bigger than the physicalities that people get caught upon. And with the experiences of the physicalities, I say for me, getting interrupted or the boundaries being crossed when I was younger and stuff, I think, well, I’m so grateful for them because they helped me walk through that for myself. I was able to see myself as bigger than just my body, and it made it a lot easier for me to learn to love all of myself, and it made it easier for me to continue to want to do so.

Tatiana Berindei:

I love it. Okay, so we do have to go on a quick break. When we get back we’re going to dive a little bit more into how your parents helped you to do that, because I’m sure a lot of parents want to know. And I send people to superpowerexperts.com for you, but I know there’s somewhere else that they can go to just dig into what you’re up to. Where can they go to find you?

Neva Lee Recla:

Yeah. So you can go to my website, which is nevaleerecla.com, and then I’m on all platforms of social media. I’m more active on Instagram, so if you want to connect with me, connect with me there. And reach out if you have any questions for me, but yeah, I’m on my website and then on social media and those are the best ways to find me and, yeah.

Tatiana Berindei:

Awesome. So this is our Kids Talk series that you’re listening to. We’re talking with Neva Lee Recla about self-love more when we get back. Stay tuned.
