Activate Your Superpowers

Have you ever considered how important self-worth is to how we live our lives? Our guest today interviewed 40 survivors of trauma to understand how self-worth helps people survive and thrive. Anne Ockene Boudreau has spent years coaching people to help them develop healthy self-worth. And welcome to my show. I’m so excited to have you here.

Oh, thank you so much AngelaMaria. I’m thrilled to be here with you today.

So let’s just start this conversation by asking you, what’s your healing superpower?

Thank you for asking me that question. I’ve actually never been asked that question before, and it’s a beautiful one, but I changed my career path late in life. And I was brought to a kind of revelatory point in my life where I decided that I wanted to do something to help people heal. Throughout my journey in business, I met with people who always talked about the bottom line was they weren’t feeling good enough, or powerful enough, or important enough. And so I decided to focus my time and my energy on the healing power of self-worth. And so what my super healing power is, is the ability to help people believe in themselves, will accept themselves, and love themselves holistically. And that is the key to living the healthiest most fulfilling life possible.

And we do need that superpower, Anne. In this world nowadays, we do believe somebody who guides us and helps us to convince ourselves to go to that deep place inside us where self-worth, I don’t know, for some reason is just covered. And I know you’re going to help us understand more. Why if where the mind is, we have that diamond inside us so covered and so to take that in a way that is so hard to adjust to bring it up to the light.

Exactly. I mean, we all have it in us.

Yes.

But from the time we were little, we were taught by our parents, and our teachers, and our coaches, and our friends even, to look outwardly rather than dig down and delve inwardly. I mean, I remember, and you probably do too, when you were little, your parents saying, “Wow, you’re a really good reader. Your writing skills.” or, “Oh, you’re such a good singer.” And that’s what I did. My self-esteem was good, but internally, no one ever asked me, “How are you doing? How are you feeling about yourself?”. So we all grow up with an overly developed outward orientation and that’s why we aren’t taught to look at that inner gem, that jewel, that beautiful spiritual essence that we all share, but we cover up with all these disguises in nests.

Exactly. So, okay. I think we’re going to have time to just at least give a little bit of taste to whoever is listening to us today. By the way, I want to say thank you so much. We did reach 251,000 listeners all around the world per month. And I feel so honored and humble just realizing how my voice, and my guest’s voice, is being welcomed in your heart, in your mind, and in your home. So thank you so much. And will you please take us back to your early years and name one memorable life lesson that is useful for you today?

I’d be happy to. I had many, many life lessons, but the one that really catapulted me into wanting to study, and research, and understand the power of self-healing was when I was bullied as a young child of eight by two girls and they bullied me for about 18 months until my father got a job in Europe so we moved to Europe. But it was very devastating to me and they really tortured me. And I did not know how to respond and none of the adults in my life stepped up and addressed the issue. So after it took place, they all felt that it would go away on its own. But as you know, when we are hurt on such a deep profound personal level, it doesn’t go away unless you address it. And so I spent years, years of my life trying to overcome and better myself and be the best I could be at everything I did outside of myself, to prove to people, to earn people’s respect and admiration because I had been so rejected as a young child.

So I built up all these defense mechanisms and I became a great student, and a great friend and I had all the boyfriends, and my teachers loved me, and all this praise from other people so that I was thriving on an external affirmation of who I was, which didn’t help me at all internally. And so, even though I was aching internally, no one ever knew about it. It felt, in fact, until my book was published, even some of my closest friends in the whole world didn’t know what I had suffered and what I had endured. And so that life lesson, which was cruel and really damaging for four decades of my life, promulgated me into wanting to learn and study everything I could about self-worth and how the brain can change so that I could change myself and eventually help others to change and learn to believe in themselves.

I honor you for these paths because instead of you feeling a victim, I believe that at the first stages of all of these browsers, you felt a victim and, “Why this to me?”.

That’s it.

But I think what I really want to highlight here Anne, is the fact that at some point you were, and it doesn’t matter how many years passed between the trauma and between you made the decision to wake up, the time doesn’t matter. The point is that you were able at some point in your life to say, “I quit. I stopped giving them the power to this experience and I’m going to start seeing this experience from a different perspective.”. And for that, I want to honor you because it doesn’t matter what was the situation, for you were those three little girls who provided that lesson. For somebody else could be a different kind of experience, different kinds of peoples, for some of the listeners could be even their parents or their partners, their kids, doesn’t matter. The most important thing is that we realize that every single experience if we go through that experience, it’s because that experience is going to help us to take our life to a different level.

You’re absolutely right. And even though at the time, it does not feel that way.

Of course. I know.

It’s excruciating.

Yes, it is.

But we do learn. Another valuable lesson is that, when you base how you feel about yourself, your self-value, your self-worth on what other people say and think about you, that is a very tenuous ground to stand your life on. So that is why I believe it is so important for every single human being, especially now, given what we’re facing in the world, to learn how to lean inwardly for strength, stamina, and inner peace. But most people don’t know how to do that because they’ve never been taught to look inwardly. They’ve always been taught to perform, and earn money, and be the best this, the best cook, and the best chef, and the best plumber. But that never satisfies the inner self, that soul self that yearns to love and accept itself.

It’s very important what you just said, and that’s why I reiterate, I honor you because doing that and it’s not easy. It’s not easy. I think that that’s why people like you are right now, here in front of the world say, “Hey, I know it’s painful. It’s hard, but it’s possible.”. And that’s why I want to say thank you so much. And before we go to a little break, it would be 10 seconds, I want you to tell people where they can go to find out more about you, and let me remind my listeners we are talking with Anne Ockene Boudreau about self-love, a healing path. She has a middle name that she says you don’t need to say, but I didn’t erase it here so I just want to be clear. Anne Ockene Boudreau, and we’re talking about self-love, a healing path. So where can people go find more about you, Anne?

Thank you for mentioning that. I have a website that is anneoboudreau.com. And I’m on Facebook and Instagram, and I would love for you to check out my website and also my book if you’re interested in healing.
