Ayn Cates Sullivan:
Welcome friends and mystical travelers. This is Ayn Cates Sullivan, serving today as one of the superpower hosts and you’re listening to Wisdom of the Ages.
And today I’ll be speaking about the ways in which our spiritual awakening can be supported by the natural world. Just think. Just the trees, the sky, the ground we’re standing upon. It’s all right here for us. The external world, reflecting the inner world.
So today I will be speaking about the ways in which our spiritual awakening can be supported by not only the elements but also animals. Today’s episode is called Healing With Horses and it all begins when you realize that horses indeed, all of life, everything around us is alive. It’s animated. It can communicate. And we just have to learn the special ways. If you listen to the end of the recording, I will share a visualization where you fly on a magical horse to find a special gift that might just help you with your ability to communicate, so, hang in here.
Over the past few years, I have recorded many interviews with spiritual teachers, authors, and spiritual influences around the world. So lots of interviews. My main theme has been understanding the spiritual roots of humanity and how ancient traditions can help us grow and thrive. So you can find many episodes on superpowerexperts.com/wisdomoftheages.
So today I’m offering a monologue about deepening our relationship with horses and how they can act as healers, even spiritual teachers. Certainly, a herd understands how community functions, and we have something to learn from observing them and respecting them, even learning how to communicate with them. So years ago, I would do a course called Equi Magic, where I would have people come in and of course the first thing people want to do is put their hand on a horse’s face. But think about that for a minute. If somebody that you met just stuck their hand in your face, it might feel a little strange. And so part of Equi Magic was learning the sensitivity and understanding that horses have a huge radius and that they have already read you by the time you walk into the barn or by a field. So they know a lot about you. And if we could just open up to that level of attunement, gosh, just think of how our world would change, right?
So what I’ll be discussing could include any herd animal. I happened to grow up with horses and I still live amongst my herd and I consider them to be wise and sentient beings. They teach me a lot. Every day they teach me a lot. I’m always humbled. They are my close friends and my daily companions.
So I’m dedicating the podcast today to Louise. She practices natural horsemanship and asked me to speak on behalf of the horses. So my promise to her is that I would speak on behalf of the horses. So clearly we’re moving beyond the belief a lot of us, the pioneers, are moving beyond the belief that domination over another species, dominion over others, is not the way forward. So the way we engage with horses now is changing and the cutting edgewise pioneers no longer break, train, or enslave horses. It’s not about fear and domination. Those who are awakening spiritually know that we are meant to be wise stewards of the earth and that involves learning to listen and respond and interact. That’s not about being weak, but it’s about learning the ways of others. So it’s important to learn to befriend the plants around us, the animals, the birds, and all the beings who live on the planet.
So my relationship with horses and the understanding of the intricate part that I play as a herd member has changed over the years. Horses are part of my life. People ask me why I don’t write or speak about them more often. And I think I will now, I think it’s just starting to emerge. And also they’ve just been such an integral part of my life that it’s just the way I live, they’re my way of life. So I always know how they are. I know how the horses are. I know if one’s not feeling well, I know if I need to change their feed, my rhythm, my daily rhythm, centers around the care and feeding of my herd. I’ve always been able to have a horse. I think that’s very fortunate. I think it’s actually… Once upon a time, it was just a normal thing. But as we’ve moved into this new technological age, people don’t always have access to nature, which I think is very sad because we need to. We need to have access to some form of life and learn how to engage with it.
So even when I was young and we lived as tenant farmers, we were able to keep horses in the backfield. And often we had horses that we’re retired and given to us. They were broken down in some way, but I didn’t care, right? We had so much fun with them. We galloped across alfalfa fields and swam in rivers and fell off and got muddy and it was just basic fun. And I remember going out at night and just galloping under the light of the full moon. That was just my biggest thrill. And I hardly ever rode with… Sometimes I got a bridle on the horse. I hardly ever found a saddle. So it was just this immersion into full life with these noble steeds.
So later on when I was a teenager, my aunt encouraged me to show horses and that was different because I’ve been just sort of galloping out around like a wild thing and now I was learning to engage in this way that was very… Well, that’s how we did it. It was the way that it was accepted by society. And I think what I want to explore on this podcast is what happened as I started to work with horses in this more… How should I put it? I guess, in a disciplined way. There were some things that were very good about it. I really learned focus and attention to detail, also lots of really good things. And then I also shifted later on because of an illness that my horse had. So I’m going to explain how the shift, the healing shift, that my horse went through, changed my own life in dramatic ways.
But right now I need to take a break talking about healing with horses. So when I come back from this break, I’m going to tell you more about Carousel, a wonderful white horse that I had, and how he changed my life. So stay tuned, I’ll be right back.
