Dance of Eros
What is the dance of Eros? In this episode of Spiritual Ecstasy, host Gabriel Cousens M.D talks about Eros being inside of the experience. It allows us to see and be in the inner experience of others. Gabriel shares some ways to live in Eros erotically in our lives in non-sexual and sexual dimensions. Eros paves the way to yearn for God when it reaches its highest level. Please tune in to hear the beat of Eros’s dance and know how to sway with it.
Dr. Gabriel Cousens:
Welcome to my program, Spiritual Ecstasy. My name is Dr. Gabriel Cousens. I’m also known as a physician of the soul, a spiritual teacher, acknowledged Yogi, rabbi, Native American sun dancer, psychiatrist, family therapist, and holistic physician. As well as being a humanitarian activity for over 48 years. Also, a father and a grandfather of three daughters while also publishing 13 books. My latest is Into the Nothing. My life focus is on helping people wake up to the extent of the truth of who they are. The topic for today is erotic living or The Dance of Eros in everyday life.
Now that’s a really interesting thing, and I think that we need to first get clear. Eros is not sexuality. Eros can be sexuality, but I am talking about an erotic way of life in which we are inside the presence of whatever experience we’re in. In the classic biblical terms, there was the two-chair beam on the arc. It’s the incredible energy that exists between the two chair beams. It’s about being connected to all of life. Eros, at the level we’re talking about, is experiencing and being connected to all of life. This is when we feel connected to all life. Exile, is what we see today so often, is when your inside experience and your outside experience are no longer connected. Erotic living is living on the inside of the experience. When we’re empty without the inner experience, that is what takes us to addictive living, addiction to sex, addiction to food, addiction to public acclaim, addictions to work, and addiction to gambling because we’re trying to fill the emptiness.
Eros is feeling the fullness and the quiet emptiness of life. That’s the deeper meaning of what Eros is about and that’s a pretty, pretty important thing to really understand the symbols. A beautiful story, which probably is a mythological story, is in the Jewish historical tradition. The rabbis were very concerned that people were not living in moral ways and they were acting excessive sexuality, in excess, and a lot of different things. They came in front of the arc and prayed that this would end. A lion comes out of the arc, symbolizes the energy between the two chairs beams, and runs off. After that, everything became very boring.
People didn’t want to study, they didn’t want to dance, and they didn’t want to work. They really weren’t particularly interested in their relationships, so they weren’t interested in having families. Basically, society became locked down emotionally, mentally, and really physically. They realized, “Oh, I think we made a mistake.” So they prayed again that Eros would come back into the world on all the different levels. The line emerged and jumped into the energy field between the two chair beams and life went back to a normal balanced way where people were involved in the Eros of life. That’s the key to understanding. And there are forces. I always tried to destroy the Eros of life and lock us down and separate us and so forth. It ruins lives and it isn’t what life is about. Part of this is the ability to hold the Eros, okay? To hold the emptiness. It’s only when we can hold the emptiness, to be at peace with that emptiness that it becomes filled with Eros, or in essence, divine presence. This happens with meditation, it happens when we have meditated spiritual fast, which we teach.
