Justin Recla:

Welcome back to Incorporating SuperPowers. Today’s guest, Ms. Tia Graham. She is the author of Be a Happy Leader and the founder of Arrive at Happy. And today we’re going to be talking about the science of happiness. Yes, folks, it is a science. You have to understand science in order to be happy. Tia, welcome to the show today.

Tia Graham:

Thank you so much for having me.

Justin Recla:

Well, first and foremost, I’m just going to say, I love the branding on your website, the Arrived at Happy. How did you get to the concept of being a happy leader?

Activate Your Superpowers

Tia Graham:

Yes. Well, thank you. A lot of people, just by looking at it, how it makes them feel. So I started off my career in the hotel industry. I led sales and marketing teams in both the United States and Europe and became a leader at a really young age. I was always very honored and passionate to be leading people and always did everything I could to be a very positive, optimistic leader for my sales teams.

And when I was struggling with my own happiness after going back to work after having my second daughter, that’s when I discovered the science of happiness and adult neuroscience and coaching and the research on happiness at work. And so Be a Happy Leader, I have this eight-step methodology, and it’s really a combination of my leadership and life experiences and everything that I have researched and learned over the last five years as well.

Justin Recla:

And I was reading your background a little bit, and it seems like there was a moment in your time after your second child was born when you had a dip in your own happiness. What brought you back?

Tia Graham:

What brought me back to my happiness, you mean?

Justin Recla:

Yeah, to your happy place. How do you rediscover that happy place?

Tia Graham:

Yes. So the first thing I did was admit and accept that I was in a really low place. I think I was like, I’m good, I’m good. And then really was like, no, I’m not good. And the first step I did was I actually hired a business and life coach, and then I started doing a lot of self-discovery on what do I need now? My life circumstances had changed. I now had two little kids and was juggling an executive career and everything else in life. And I started doing a lot of self-discovery and going deep on understanding, okay, my circumstances have changed. What do I need now? And I would say that the third step was I started studying again, and I started learning, and I started studying positive psychology, the science of happiness. And so those were the main steps towards a journey back to arrive at happiness.

Justin Recla:

I love the fact that you teach what you’ve experienced, and there are so many people that are going through life, especially over the last two yearsThe last two years have just been a rollercoaster of emotions, uncertainty, and so forth. I’m just going to ask, what’s one thing that you could share with our listeners right now? If they’re not in a happy place, what’s the one thing you would have them focus on to get back to a place that’s happy?

Tia Graham:

It’s hard to say one thing. There are so many. Can I give you two?

Justin Recla:

Give me two.

Tia Graham:

Okay. So for people who are listening and are not feeling happy right now, the number one predictor of happiness across the globe, across cultures and ethnicities, and age groups, the number one predictor is human connection. So I would say if you’re not feeling very happy, increase the amount of time that you’re spending with friends and family. And even if you’re going through really rough times, be open, be vulnerable and let your friends and family know. That’s number one.

And if I were to say a number two is to prioritize your meds every single day. And your meds are meditation, exercise, a healthy diet, and sleeping at least seven hours a night because your mind is always connected to your body. So make sure you’re taking care of your body to help have a happy mind.

Justin Recla:

I absolutely love that. Absolutely love that. Folks, when we get back from break, we’re going to dive down this rabbit hole even further as to why it’s important to understand the science of happiness so you can be a better leader in your business, in your family, and in your life. But before we go on break, Tia, where can people go find more information about you?

Tia Graham:
