Activate Your Superpowers

Welcome to Incorporating SuperPowers. I’m your host, Justin Recla, and today we are going to be talking about power and wealth, and how to Power Your Profits. You’ve been listening to the show for a while, we’ve had lots of conversations around money and mindset, and now we’re going to ramp it up a notch and we’re going to, I wouldn’t even say power, I’m going to say superpower your wealth because my guest today is Susie Carder. She’s got an amazing story. I mean, how old are your kids, Susie?

Oh boy. So, they are 32 and 34.

Okay, so 30 some odd years ago, she was a hairdresser and realized that that wasn’t working for, and has since created not one, but two $10 million-plus businesses. She’s helped literally tens of thousands of entrepreneurs; business owners help power their revenue. She’s got a new book coming out. What’s the title of the book?

Power Your Profits, which is so perfect for this topic today, because it’s all about the money, honey.

That’s it. So, how do you Power your Profits? I mean, it’s got to be a theme today, because my show I just recorded right before this was all about mindset and wealth, and so I think this is a beautiful way of stepping into it. So Susie, talk to me a little bit about it, first and foremost, how did you get from being a hairdresser to creating two $10 million companies?

The School of Hard Knocks, right? So I have my Ph.D., so those of you that don’t know, and my Ph.D. is my public high school diploma. So, I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and started as a hairdresser, and that was my vocation. 15% of our financial success is based on our technical ability. So as a hairdresser was how I color cut it, chemical, really worked with my clients. My goal was all my clients were chemically dependent on me.

I had two little kids, I got married early, divorced early. I didn’t know anything about getting married or picking a husband at all, shame on me. So when I got divorced, I had no child support or alimony, and I had to figure out how I take care of my children? My kids were six months old and 18 months old when I left, so you know it was bad, leaving when your baby’s that young.

Yeah.

So, I had to figure it out quickly. I have my Ph.D., which is my public high school diploma, so I didn’t have business acumen. I went to bookstores, and I would read. Entrepreneurs and this is most of us, have got to learn it today and implement it tomorrow. So, I would go and read the who’s who in marketing and how do I build a clientele, and how do I build this business and how do I manage the finances? So anything that I didn’t know how to do, I went and found a course, right? So the information wasn’t as easy as readily as it is today, right? There are podcasts on everything, you’re online, you can just Google something, but didn’t have Google back then.

So as a hairdresser being so determined, I made a quarter of a million dollars a year working three days a week. To give you, Justin, some kind of sense of what that is. Back then, again, I’m a little more seasoned, the average hairdresser was making about $30,000 a year. So at that time, I got the attention of one of the major manufacturers and distributors, Paul Mitchell, he said, “How are you doing this? Because most hairdressers don’t make this kind of money.” I’m like, “Oh, I’ll share.” They’re like, “Oh my God, that would be amazing.”

So, I started doing these little cluster classes for Paul Mitchell and I realized I loved speaking. Now, I didn’t know how to make it a business, right? Clients would say, “Oh my God, I love what you do. Do you have a book?” I’m like, “No, I’m a hairdresser. I’m just trying to show you what I do and how I make money.” Then I kept hearing it over and over and over again, I’m like, “All right, I’ll write a book.” Justin, I thought if you write a book you’ll be famous and all your money problems will go away.

That’s what’s supposed to happen, right?

Right.

You get a book, and poof, you’ve arrived.

Well, and money will fall from the sky. Yeah, no. I always tell my clients, you have to have a book because the book gives you credibility, but a book is really an expensive business card.

Absolutely, absolutely is.

So I decided, “Well, I’m going to write a book.” So I wrote a book and then people said, “Oh my God, Susie, I love the book, but I hate to read, do you have it on audio?” I’m like, “No, I just wrote the book. I don’t know how to do that, I’m a hairdresser, I just wanted to help you.” There was no strategy, plan, goal, it just happened. Every product that I had came from my customers, they’re like, “Oh my gosh, can I have that? Can I buy that?” I’m like, “Well, how much will you pay for that?”

But literally, Justin, it was the strategy. How much would you pay for that? They’re like, “Oh my God, will you coach me?” “I don’t know, how much will you pay for that?” Making a quarter of a million dollars a year over here, so it’s got to be worth my time over here. It was ignorance on fire, I’m not even going to lie.

Well, you know what? I’m going to add that a bit because it wasn’t. I would say that you were guided because you couldn’t have been following that path, you couldn’t have ended up there unless you were tapped in unless you had the chutzpah to actually say those things, ask those questions, read the books, and take the action steps.

I think that’s where a lot of people get stuck in thinking, “Well, this is what I know, this is what I know how to do, and this is how I make money.” They don’t necessarily look at the other ways that they can do that.

Right.

Because by all intents and purposes you were making a quarter-million dollars a year, that’s a good living, right?

Right.

But yet, as you said, well, somebody wants my attention over here, and you’re like, “Okay, well, what are you going to pay for that? Because it’s going to take away from my time over here.”

Right.

That’s brilliant. To me, that feels guided. I mean, how else do you end up working with a name like Paul Mitchell?

Right. Yes, I’m covered, I’m guided. I definitely know I got a higher power in my back pocket supporting me and allowing me to be who I am in the world.
