Welcome and blessings. This is Ayn Cates Sullivan, host of Wisdom of the Ages where we invite the sacred into modern-day reality. My guest today is Dr. Mark Halpern, who has written a very helpful new book called Coherence Revolution, and boy, do we need that right now. I really want my listeners to pay attention here. There’s a lot in his book that you can really dive into. There are many paths you can find for his book and also on his website because everybody, we’re in a shift in consciousness right now, and we need to understand our coherence. We’re going to dive into what that means. Dr. Halpern is a chiropractor, a man who has learned how to move from anxiety and personal suffering into coherence, so we can really learn something from his tale. Dr. Mark Halpern, welcome.

Tell us just a little bit about coherence, just so everybody’s on the same page. I think we know what chaos is, right, but what’s coherence?

Dr. Mark Halpern:

Well, most people have experienced it in some form or another at one time or another. Athletes will talk about being in the zone, and when an athlete is in the zone, time slows down. Their thinking is really clear. Their body is in tune with their brain. Everything is functioning at 100%. Sometimes you walk into a party or you go into a place with other people, and you feel this sense that you want to go talk to somebody. There’s a coherent feeling. There’s something that is resonant between you. From a physiological state, coherence is when you are able to get your heart rhythm into what’s called a coherent rhythm. It almost looks like a sine wave, a nice rhythm of breathing in and breathing out in a comfortable manner.

When you start getting your heart into a very coherent rhythm, what happens is the electrical signal from your heart is about 40 times stronger than the signal from your brain, the electrical signals from your brain, and so in the body, as, in the rest of the world, the greater frequency, the greater strength of a wave will take over the smaller one. Essentially the brain’s waves become entrained to the heart’s frequency. When you start getting your heart into a nice sine wave and what’s called heart rate variability is increased, you start to stimulate in a positive way the parts of the brain that deal with decision making, that deal with stress, that deal with your immune system, and pain and sleep, and the way your body essentially makes high brain decisions and the way it functions.

The idea is that you can actually choose your emotional state through techniques that I teach in my book, and heart math is one of them, and as you get your heart into a coherent rhythm, you start to entrain your brain. Once that happens, you enter a state of what’s called physiological coherence. It’s not a theoretical state. You feel it, and your body feels it. It’s a resilient state. It’s where you are in less pain. It’s where you are under less stress. You can handle what’s going on around you. It’s where you are adaptable to life circumstances, and it’s where your relationships improve and where you can deal with all the circumstances of your life.

Physiological coherence is something that we should aim for literally in each moment of our lives because we’re all experiencing so much stress coming at us, whether it’s physical, or chemical, or emotional, or electromagnetic, we have so much stress coming at us that we have to have tools to be able to keep us in this physiological, coherent state so that we can function and thrive.
