He’s the founder of Create Your Own Life podcast. He’s a teacher, personal trainer, and marketer, and he’s awesome. Today, we’ll be talking him about young, successful entrepreneurs. Without further ado, will you help me welcome our amazing guest, Jeremy Slate. Hi Jeremy!

Hey Neva, stoked to be hanging out with you here. I know we met at New Media Summit for the second time because I met you the previous year as well. It was awesome to hang out.

Yeah, it was really fun. I really enjoyed it.

Let’s jump right in and ask, what are your superpowers?

What are my superpowers? Hm … It’s funny because I feel like that’s one of those things too that I’ve worked on a lot in the last six months to a year because I take a look at it, and I always did stuff that I wasn’t good at and it’s a waste of time when you do that. I’m really good at anything having to do with creating marketing copy. I’m really good at anything involving writing, and content creation. I’m horrible at things that have to do with managing money, that’s why I have a wife. She’s very good at that, I’m not. Anything that has to do with running teams. My wife is really good at that. It’s interesting to me that … and I don’t know, maybe you see this with the people you talk to … I know what my superpowers are, and I concentrate on only those now, and I’ve found people to help me that have their own superpowers that can really help me.

Yeah. I agree. I do that. If I’m having trouble with learning, I go to parents and I say, “Okay, how do I do this?” I do it a little differently, but I get what you mean.

Yeah, it’s the whole idea of self-awareness I guess as they say. Know what you’re good at, and know what you’re not good at, and be honest with yourself.

Exactly. Exactly. And do what you love to do, and if you don’t like doing something, just don’t do it. You know?

Absolutely.

How do you use your superpowers in your daily life in your work?

I guess for me, it’s funny because I kinda like feeling like I’m in a bat cave sometimes. I’ll take big marketing projects like alright, we’re gonna build a marketing funnel. I’m like, “All right everybody, I’ll see you in about 12 to 14 hours. I usually lock myself in a room and just work on a project like that. But, the thing is, I don’t waste a lot of time that way. I’m able to sit down, and just work on something, hit every step, and then have somebody else take a look at it for me later and say, “Hey, change this, change this, change this, and you spelled a couple words there wrong.”

But, for me, the power is, sitting down there and work on that project, and forgetting to eat sometimes until it’s done. Because it’s over and done with. When we first brought our new marketing funnel in, I built it in about 14 hours without really breaking unless I had to go to the bathroom, and people spend weeks building those. For me, we nailed it out in a day and then all right, let’s test it and see what works and see what we can perfect.

That’s smart. I do that sometimes if I’m really busy that day. I don’t have time to eat and my parents they do keto. There was a time when we had friends over, and I asked my mom, “Hey will you make me some food?” She’s like, “Nah, you don’t need food.” I’m like, “Mom! I’m not keto!”

That’s awesome. This is not my fast, it’s your fast Mother.

Exactly, I’m like, “I can’t go the day without eating at least twice.”

Yeah. Let me ask you, Neva. Do you do that too? Do you get into long projects like that? Because I know for me, it gets me in a flow if you know what I mean. Where I get it, and I just go. I feel like because of that, everything feels like it takes less time, and I do better work because it’s so concentrated. Do you end up doing anything like that with what you do?

Young Entrepreneur Secrets with Neva Lee Recla

I did that yesterday because I had a speaking engagement at this business event we go to, Eliances. I was speaking there. It was only one minute, everyone got a minute to speak. I was basically talking about my book and stuff. I said, “Mom, I want to reward myself somehow.” I hadn’t done any of my learning. I’m homeschooled so I work from home.

As I hadn’t done any of my learning, we woke up at five in the morning to get there. I’d been wanting this doll called, it’s a Made to Move Barbie, and I’m like, “Okay, I’m gonna knock all this out, so I can finish and go to the store.” I finished, I put my iPod down, and I closed it. I was sitting at the table with my dad and I went … and he starting laughing. I ran to my room to get changed. I was working my butt off and I was very hungry, but I didn’t eat just so I could finish.

I think that was really interesting though because I do stuff like that with myself too. Right now, in April, we’re in the midst of our best sales month ever. But, I still haven’t hit that number that was gonna allow me to get the prize I want. Which, I’ve played drums for years, and years, and years, but we live in an apartment now so it’s kinda like, I can’t really play my drums here, because it really bothers people. I found this full electric drum kit on Amazon, and if I hit that goal this month, I get to buy it. I have six days left or something like that to hit that goal. I really, really, really want to consistently start playing drums again. I love that idea.

That’s awesome. Yeah. If you want something, you work for it. I want to make a million dollars before the end of 2018, and buy a pig and name is Hamlet.

Do you want to get a pig?

A teacup pig, yes.

You know I have a pig, right?

You do?

I have a pig.

You do?

His name is Remington.

That’s awesome. My sister, her name is Danica. Her unicorn name is Remington.

Oh my gosh, do you want me to go grab him quick? I’ll mute it because he screams and he’ll make a little noise and I don’t want to blow your eardrums out.

Sure.

Okay.

Thank you. Oh, my goodness, gracious. So cute! He’s so cute. Oh.

He doesn’t enjoy being picked up, so I didn’t want him to yell into your eardrums.

Oh, thank you. He’s so cute.

He’s about 40 pounds. He’s what’s called a mini pig, and they don’t get any bigger than that.

He’s pretty big.

He’s bigger than our dog, so yeah.

I have a toy schnauzer. She’s in the room with me right now playing, and she’s seven pounds. That’s as big as she’ll ever get.

Wow.

She’s itty bitty. I want to get a pig. I thought I don’t want a big pig, but I want something her size that she can play with, and I love tiny, smooshy things.

When it comes time to get that pig, talk to us and we’ll give you some advice on how to find the best one.

Yeah. Because I told my parents, once I make a million dollars, they can’t tell me whether or not, what animal I can get or not. I thought I’m getting a pig.

That’s awesome. I love the responsibility level.

They still don’t want a giant pig, so I’m gonna be cognoscente of that. They say, “We have to see the parents first.”

That’s really, really important. Because if the parents are big, the pig’s gonna be big.

Sometimes people won’t let you see that parents. But, if you don’t get to see the parents, next place.

Yeah, you don’t want that pig. It’s gonna be a big pig.

Because will sell pigs, and say, “Oh, it’s a tiny pig.” It’s actually just a baby, regular size pig.

I think the thing a lot of people don’t realize is the classification for “mini pig”, is anything under 200 pounds. Anything under 200 pounds, is considered mini. I don’t know. I don’t think I could put a 200-pound pig in my bed. Him, yes. He can go in my bed. But anyway.

That’s awesome though. I have a question for you before we go on the break.

Sure.

What do pigs eat?

You go to Tractor Supply, and you buy a 25-pound bag of pig food. It’s these little pellets that smell like grass, and then you dump water in them and then they blow up like slop. They sound gross when they eat because they don’t really breathe. They just eat. It’s really funny. They eat in a very greedy way. If you go to Tractor Supply, you get 25 pounds of pig food, and he’s good to go.

Nice. I know that. My dog, if anytime we give her food or something, I don’t say the word in front of her because she will want one. Anytime she goes to eat, she takes probably 10 seconds at the most.

Wow.

Even if it’s an egg, she takes 10 seconds to eat it.

Oh my gosh.

Yeah. Before we get to the break, where can people go to find out more about you?

They can find me over at jeremyryanslate.com. I use my middle name because my parents named me after an actor from the TV show Bonanza in the ’70s, so it allowed people to actually find me on Google.

Nice. Okay. We’re gonna take a quick break, and we’ll be right back. We’ve been talking with Jeremy Ryan Slate about young, successful entrepreneurs. We’ll be right back.
