The Unifying Power of Values
What is the unifying power of values? What is the power of a life guided by positive values over programmed beliefs, and what impact can that power have on our shared world? In this episode of Superpowers of the Soul, Amorahki chats with Jeff Rasley about this power as its evidence in the world via his work with the Basa Village Foundation. Jeff, a lawyer, author, professor, and activist, is president of the Foundation, which funds culturally sensitive development in Nepal. They exchanged ideas on the philosophy of living a value-based life and being of service to the world as the precursors to becoming a better person. Prepare to be inspired by what can happen when we bravely choose to go beyond belief into a values-based way of living and decision-making. Tune in to know more about the unifying power of values.
Amorahki:
Hello, everyone. And thank you so much for joining us today for another episode of SuperPowers of the Soul. I’m your host, Amorahki. And today, I am so deeply honored. And I’m excited to be talking with our extraordinary guest, Jeff Rasley.Â
We are talking about the unifying power of values. You know, I feel like, especially right now, so many of us are in this place of asking ourselves some deeper questions. All kinds of things are certain about our world, where it’s heading, and our place in it all. And how we could best contribute to a better present and future for all of us at this particular moment. In other words, so many of us are pondering that question. What difference for the better can I make? And where should I be focusing my attention on my energy right now? And that’s why I’m so thrilled to have Jeff joining us today to explore the power of a life guided by positive values, over-programmed beliefs, and the astounding impact that power can have. Certainly, on each of us individually, but also, collectively in our shared world.
And so, you know, I find Jeff Rasley to be just an incredible human being, and then we’ll share a little bit about him. I do so knowing there really are no words to do this man justice truly. Jeff is a lawyer, he’s an author and a director for five nonprofits. At present, he teaches the Philosophy of Philanthropy at Butler University. He’s the US liaison for Adventure GeoTreks Ltd., which is a Himalayan expedition company. e’s the president of the Basa Village Foundation, which funds culturally sensitive development in Nepal. I absolutely love listening to him discuss his excellent work a little bit. I’ve been privileged to get my ears around, you know, through this foundation, as well as his philosophy on how living a values-based life and being of service to the world is actually the precursor to becoming a better person for yourself.Â
I think so many times, many of us, you know, fall innocently into that trap of believing that I’ll become this wonderful person, and then I’ll share my wonderfulness generously with the world. And actually, there’s a different way. I love this philosophy on how we have that inverse sometimes. So, you know, I find you have to be such a humble being and a super inspiring soul. I’m astounded by the important work that he’s up to you in the world. And I’m absolutely delighted to have him here to share his adventures and share his wisdom with us. Let’s just go ahead and bring him on. Jeff, thank you so much for being here with us today.
Jeff Rasley:
Thank you for having me. I really appreciate the introduction. I’d like to meet that guy. He’s pretty cool.
Amorahki:
See, as for what I love about you, I just love it. I am so happy to be talking with you today about the unifying power values and for all of us listening to hear you know, what can really happen for ourselves and our world when someone I would dare say bravely, I would say bravely, chooses to kind of go beyond programmed beliefs and step into a values-based way of living in decision making. And I’m very eager to hear about your experiences and take on all of that.Â
But before we get deep into all the profound wisdom and inspiration I know you have to share, I’m sure our audience would love to hear your answer to our favorite question around here. And that is, what are your SuperPowers of the Soul? And how are you using them for good right now?
Jeff Rasley:
I know I provided a written answer to that question a while ago, and I don’t remember what. So I have to make one up right here on the spot. You know, the little chat we had before we came online. Just sort of reminded me took me back to when did I start really kind of feeling like I had to do something extraordinary in the sense of breaking what was going on within my own life kind of community. And then I think that was my senior year in high school.
The Vietnam War was very intense. And there was a lot within my hometown, just, you know, pro-war, anti-war, just a lot of polarization and dispute. And so I thought the one thing though, that maybe the whole community could unite around, would be helping people less fortunate than us. And so, with my high school girlfriend at the time, I have to give her credit, we founded the first walk for hunger in the city of Goshen, Indiana, which became an annual tradition. And it really rallied the community, the kids, the grown-ups, the school administration, all around this cause which we raised money to give to an NGO working with a Native American reservation, as well as a foundation over in Asia. And we walked all through town and so forth. And it was just a wonderful sort of unifying experience. And so I guess that success gave me a feeling of confidence that that’s something I could do. And I’ve done that in different ways throughout different stages of my life. So exactly how you describe that a superpower may be finding ways to unify a community.
Amorahki:
Absolutely. Okay, folks, you can already hear how rich and inspiring this conversation will be. So I can’t wait to get deep into it. And you know what, we’re going to take our break right now so we can get into it without interruption when we get back. I want to hear so much of what you have to say without interruption. So, just before we go to break, Jeff, where can we tell people to go to find out more about you and connect with you?
Jeff Rasley:
The best place would be my website jeffrasleycom.
Amorahki:
Excellent. Thank you. And folks, we’ll be sure to put that link up on the show page for you too. All right, everyone, you are listening to the Superpowers of the Soul here on the Superpower Network.
