Shayna Renee Hammond:

I am so excited to be here. Thanks for having me.

Tonya Dawn Recla:

You’re so welcome. We’re gonna get into all of the great stuff you’re doing. Before we do that? What are your superpowers? And how are you using them? For good?

Shayna Renee Hammond:

Sure, I would have to say my first superpower is co-creating and cultivating containers and communities where everyone in that particular container, feels safe enough to be vulnerable. And the container itself is rigorous enough to call everyone higher. So I’m a former, your former principal. And so whether it’s a classroom, I’m also a leadership coach, a spiritual life coach, whether it’s a group coaching session, I’m able to create that container in a way that people can see themselves in a way maybe they haven’t ever seen before, or maybe haven’t seen in a very long time. And so the way I use that in the world is through two organizations. One I’ve been leading I founded 10 years ago called Lead for Liberation, where we work with nonprofits, foundations, and school districts who are interested in completely redesigning their culture for both themselves and those they serve. And so we have a methodology that we call people into and of course, it starts with leadership development and raising consciousness and emotional intelligence.

Tonya Dawn Recla:

Wonderful, beautiful thank you so much for that and certainly, you have your hands in so many amazing places and folks I want to apologize to Shayna Renee Hammond right we this is an I apologize for that we talked about it right before, and there we go. Right that this is grace in action when we can go, oh goodness, and say hey, this is I want to honor the fact that this is your name right Shayna Renee Hammond and so we’ll make sure on our end that that’s noted and also folks go and check out everything that she’s got going on here Becoming an IndigoWoman her book on Amazon. We’ll have a link there. Also Indigo Women Community and Lead for Liberation. We’ll make sure to include the links on the episode page go check those out. This is these are no small matters. You’re talking about your Shayna like your this intersection and the bridging and seeing the brilliance of what the black woman voice gets to add and certainly I don’t want to put words into your mouth. How would you refer I love Indigo woman? Is that a phrase that is preferable? How can we best talk about this today?

Shayna Renee Hammond:

Yes. So Indigo women was an organization and a movement really born out of Lead for Liberation, my first organization, and the word Indigo actually was was placed in really given to me on a spiritual level in a therapy session actually. I was in therapy and something I’ve learned along the way is whenever I’m transforming or leveling up in some way, I’ve now learned to go to therapy proactively I don’t wait until things are overwhelming or I feel like you know I’m you know breaking apart or anything like that. I know that any level-up situation is going to call me to learn and heal on a deeper level. And so I just go ahead and proactively and so I was in therapy as the vision for Indigo women was forming I knew that I was supposed to work with. And I was being called specifically to create a container for black women in leadership. When I was doing my work and Lead for Liberation, I kept hearing very similar challenges as well as very similar successes and desires. And it wasn’t enough to just create another program within Lead for Liberation, it was very clear, this had to be a very particular separate container. And I remember being flashed forward to this therapy session. And I was like, you know, I don’t know really what this is. And, of course, my therapist called me to really think about my own transformation. And when I think about my own transformation, something that I’m always working on and growing into is being more comfortable being seen, heard, and received on large levels. And my therapist at the time said, tell me a word that comes to mind that reminds you of how magnificent you are that reminds you to not hide that reminds you to be all of ours. And immediately the actually the first thought that came to mind was, this word needs to encapsulate both the masculine and feminine energies of me. And as soon as that awareness came through Indigo came in right after, and lo and behold, indigo, the color is a mixture of red and blue, which are traditionally tied to masculine and feminine energies. And then when you look at the meanings behind Indigo, spirituality, intuition, fairness, all the attributes of leadership that are born out of the feminine qualities in me that I love, and that I’ve learned to love, and I’ve learned to lean into, because we don’t necessarily have a society that teaches us that those parts of us are valued, especially in leadership. And so he was just very divine. I trusted it. I said, you know, it really resonated, I kept getting a yes, spiritually around it. And so Indigo women was born. And it is that special place for black women to come back home to themselves and to rewrite and rediscover their divine purpose for leadership in life.

Tonya Dawn Recla:

That’s like, amen. And drop the mic moment right there like that, that that you said it all at that moment. And thank you, thank you for that. Well, when we come back from the break, folks, we’re gonna dive into a little bit about why that’s important. Right? What are we talking about here late like we have, we have all kinds of empowerment and change leadership concepts, and what’s really precious and incredibly special about what’s cultivated in these spaces? I think I think there’s no so when we come back, we’re gonna talk into that space a little bit before we do, make sure you go check out LeadforLiberation.com and IndigoWomenCommunity.com. Check out Shayne’s book on Amazon, Becoming an Indigo Woman. We will be right back after the break.
