Do you often find yourself captured by movie magic? Do you consider yourself a cinephile, a person who loves to watch movies? If yes, then this episode of Reclamation is perfect for you. The Reclas, Tonya, Justin, and Neva, talk about their love of movies that serves as a common ground for the whole family. They share how they mimic and reenact movie quotes and lines after watching the film. Things like movies allow us to go with a natural rhythm and flow because it mirrors the things happening to us. Join The Reclas as they converse about movies and the déjà vu moments that occur when movies mimic real-life situations.

(singing).
Justin Recla:
All Right. We’ve got a confession, and this might be a little weird.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Oh, no. It’s really weird.
Neva Lee Recla:
Very weird.
Justin Recla:
But it’s only weird if you don’t embrace it. We are a family of movie quotes. We love movies, and we love speaking in movie quotes. I mean, anytime there’s a word that gets triggered, that reminds us of a particular movie. We just happened to insert the quote, and yes, sometimes those quotes are from, well, dare I say, inappropriate movies, but that’s kind of what this episode is all about, it’s all about having fun. It’s about being creative, and it’s about not taking yourself so seriously. If you’ve been paying attention, if you’re not a fan, yes, that opening was from… That was a shout-out to one of our favorite movie series, Pitch Perfect, and we talk in Pitch Perfect quotes. We talk in Star Wars quotes. We talk in-
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Marvel.
Justin Recla:
… Marvel quotes. I mean, if there’s a Marvel movie out there, we’ve probably seen it a thousand times. Of course, I mean, it’s all things superpowers. Right? Today’s episode is all about just getting creative and having fun, and folks, it’s kind of weird, because I’m a little bit behind the curve here on the conversation of movie quotes because I hadn’t realized this, but my two ladies here have been speaking in Pitch Perfect quotes now for some time. Because I have watched them, and I enjoyed them, and they’re fun. When I went back and watched them again, I was like, wait a sec, Tonya says that all the time, and I thought it was like this brilliance, and of course, it is brilliance. Right? But she was pulling in from this movie, and Neva, the same thing. Neva’s talking in movie quotes like that’s really quick.
I’m just going to get the ball rolling here. Where does that come from? Why do we talk in movie quotes? And should people now turn off the show and stop listening, because we watch the movie Pitch Perfect?
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Well, I guess that’s up to them. Certainly, we’re not professing that the Pitch Perfect series is a cinematic genius, nor the Marvel movies, or anything else. Although, they have their own brilliance, and that’s important. Right? We’re not die-hard cinematic movie critics or anything like that. We do it for very different reasons. We do it because it’s fun. Right? One of the challenges you have when you have a 24/7 family, or family that’s wanting to operate, so everybody has a chance to contribute to the whole, you got to bend a little. You got to let the lines blur a little bit. Do you know? For instance, I don’t love video games, but Justin and Neva enjoy them, so we find ones that we can play together. Then they get to share in that on their own. That’s not very spiritually woo-woo, but they love it, so we do it. Same with the movies.
Justin Recla:
Is it?
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Is it? That was a wrong quote. That was, “Was it?”
Justin Recla:Â Â
“Was it?”
Tonya Dawn Recla:
But that leads in perfectly because, for me, it’s syncopation. For me, there are patterns, and there are threads that can be pulled on. It’s not the words. It’s not the exact situation that matches up, and that’s what leads to the inappropriateness. Right? When I looked at Neva, and I’m like, “You are a shit mother,” and that’s from Orphan Black. Totally inappropriate. I should not be saying that to my daughter. Of course, she knew the context, but it’s more that we were in a particular dialogue where it just is the immediate lead into that line. And there is a natural rhythm and a flow, and a syncopation that if you let yourself sort of sync into being with these things, like movies and TV shows. We talk about Lucifer. Right? The show is on Netflix. Again, certain people could have some questions about why we watch that, and why we watch that with our daughter. But there are symbols that we pull out. There are points that we pull out. There is, again, this rhythm of certain lines and certain nuances that help inform the human condition, in a sense.
Justin Recla:
To your point, babe, I think it comes down to like you said, fluidity. Right? Of commonality. It’s a common ground because we’ve all seen the movies, so when a situation arises, it mirrors what we’ve seen in the movie, well, there’s only one response.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
It’s like a secret language.
Justin Recla:
Yeah.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
But we don’t mean to leave anyone out. We just sort of sync into it, like sync, not sink, but sync, sync up in it, and then it just flows from that place.
Justin Recla:
Neva, I don’t hang out with any other 11-year-olds besides yourself.
Neva Lee Recla:
I hope not.
Justin Recla:
Do you talk like that with your friends? In movie quotes?
Neva Lee Recla:
Well, sometimes I do. It’s mostly song quotes for me and my friends because we’re all hardcore metal fans and stuff. So, we’ll be quoting songs and stuff, or movies that we’ve all watched together. I quote Hamilton, the musical, a lot. Y’all should watch that. It’s very awesome. Let’s be honest, it’s kind of absurd to have these types of conversations, and, “Yes, let’s be honest,” is a movie quote from Pitch Perfect. All the movies we watch aren’t necessarily age-appropriate for me, necessarily follow all the same constructs that we follow, but we’re able to see fun things in it. We always talk in movie quotes. I can’t think of a time that we haven’t as of recently, and-
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Like 11 years of your life.
Neva Lee Recla:
Yep. Yeah.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Your whole life.
Neva Lee Recla:
Basically.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
All of your life.
Neva Lee Recla:
All of my life.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
The whole thing.
Neva Lee Recla:
11 years. That’s a long time.
Justin Recla:
“Whoomp. There it is.”
Neva Lee Recla:
See, we do that a lot. It could be in any type of conversation. Guaranteed, I’ve snuck a movie quote onto almost all my podcast episodes. They’re kind of sneaky. You have to really find them, but it adds so much play to a conversation because it adds… Like we’re talking about the secret language.
Justin Recla:
Well, that secret language, I think it speaks more than just language. It’s the concept of in-group, out-group dynamics. Right? Of understanding the constructs in which these movies are consistent in, where they exist, so I want to dive down that rabbit hole a little bit further on the back end of this conversation. But before we do, I just want to share and invite you all to come to play with us. Come dive into the Superpower Universe. Go to superpowerexperts.com. Join the Superpower Universe.
