Escape the Metaverse

Why do we need to escape the Metaverse? Are you finding something within this virtual space? In this episode of Reclamation, the Reclas: Justin, Tonya, and Neva get real about the Metaverse, and how we can escape it., People allocate most of their time scrolling up and down through social media in a world run by technology. Yet, we need to step outside the box and prevent ourselves from being lured into a fake reality. The Reclas share their experiences with this application and teach us how they made a choice and changed the way they view this tool for their benefit. Tune in and find out how to change your mindset and perspective to escape from the shackles of the Metaverse.

Justin Recla:

Welcome back to Reclamation. And today we are going to be exploring the conversation that I know is out there right now. Made some big news, but we’re going to be looking at it from a different perspective because today we’re going to be exploring how to escape the Metaverse. Yes, that’s right. We’re talking about Facebook today folks, and how to escape the Metaverse, right? This overarching concept Facebook’s changed its name and all the apps are staying the same and all that kind of stuff and good on Zuck, right? That’s a business decision.

But I want to explore this a little bit further because I’ve been playing in the Facebook realm, the social media realm for some time now as the operations director for our network and for our businesses, and looking out along the landscape, and what’s going on, and seeing how people are experiencing things. And I got to be honest folks, it’s ugly. It really is. I mean, the divisiveness, the fact that people are making fun of other people’s tragedies, pitting each other against one another, and focusing on how much money we can make. Right? All through Facebook. Really doesn’t do any good. And honestly, it’s become this field for idolization, right? For things that replace the only thing that matters in life, and we get lost in the muck and mire. We try to find ourselves and identify it. And we find comfort in those that suffer the same way that does. Right?

And this is something I’ve been playing with and looking at and whatnot. And we’ve had our own journey and our own venture with Facebook. And we had a big following on Facebook, like six or 7,000 people on our Super Power Experts webpage, it got censored, it got shut down. We walked away for a little bit, but it’s still out there. It’s still a place where people are going in and we know that there’s a better option. We know there’s a better way. And I got to tell you, my experience with Facebook, y’all get a kick out of this.

I’ve downloaded the app and deleted it from my phone so many times now that the app store won’t even let me search for it anymore. It’s gone. It’s like, God stepped in and said, no, you can stop looking here now because you’re not going to find what you’re looking for. And so I want to explore today, how do we escape the Meta Verse right? Because when that name change came about, I was like, oh, damn. That’s big. Because it screams out this whole other thing of what they’re actually doing in that space. And unless we step back and outside of the box, it’s hard for us to see really what’s going on there. And the fact that at the end of the day, you’re really not going to find what you’re actually looking for inside the Meta Verse. And so, this is really important because Neva, you’ve grown up in the social media world, right? For us, it was new, right? Because we were born in the 1900s, right? We were born in the 1900s and social media wasn’t a thing. Right?

Neva Lee Recla:

Imagine the horror, the terror of a world without social media.

Justin Recla:

We had to write little handwritten notes with, do you like me? Yes or no?

Neva Lee Recla:

That’s absurd.

Justin Recla:

Right? That was like, right? That was our life, but you’ve grown up in the world of technology and social media, and so forth. And I know your journey with it and so forth. And I know how you engage and don’t engage in social media, but as a kid, what’s your advice to parents and other kids on navigating that space? How can they find or get out of it and come to the realization that it’s a fake reality?

Neva Lee Recla:

That’s a good point. Dang, there’s like so many points I can make, I just like, froze. I think that it’s good. And it is also a learning experience. I talk about this show a lot because I have so much fun over there, but Tatiana and I did an episode on SPN that will be coming out soon around self-love.

We talked about the effects of social media on that because I’ve seen it in so many people around when you’re scrolling and you see people that don’t even necessarily look real because it’s so clearly photoshopped or whatever, or you see people who aren’t clearly photoshopped and the thoughts come rushing in. Like, oh goodness, why don’t I look like that? Because dad, you mentioned the idolization that so easily happens. It creates this whole new layer of quote-unquote reality. And so many people get caught up in it or around facts. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s real, what’s fake.

I think for me, I’ve learned to, one, I don’t go there to get facts. I don’t go there to get information on the world. Most of the time, if I’m on social media, it’s simply to look at cute animal pictures or something like that.

Justin Recla:

This is true folks. I’ve looked at and we monitor her Instagram account and all that kind of stuff.

Neva Lee Recla:

I follow probably 20 different animal accounts.

Justin Recla:

And there are puppies and cats all up and down that feed.

Neva Lee Recla:

Either that or things around equality or spirituality. That’s about it for me or yummy food pictures. That’s it. And that’s awesome. And other people do it for different reasons, and of course, I do it to promote my business and all that. And I think growing up in the business realm and being in social media and stuff, I’ve learned to kind of, I guess, change the typical usage of it because I don’t go there to necessarily be a consumer. Well, I am fairly active on Instagram and stuff, I’m very clear, like, okay, I am not going to actually benefit from this. This is simply because I am bored. Versus when I’m posting about my business and stuff, I know very clearly the difference between I’m a consumer or I’m a producer? Yeah. So I think differentiating those two and knowing this is where I go to get my facts, is my mindset around it. Versus it’s so easy if you’re not in the, I guess right mindset for it to just get sucked into a black hole. It’s so easy to be in a conversation with somebody and they get on their phone the next thing you know, they’ve been looking at their phone for 20 minutes and you’re like, we were having a conversation.

Justin Recla:

Or legs fall asleep because you’ve been on the toilet scrolling for so long that you can’t get off.

Neva Lee Recla:

No, that is not okay. It’s not.

Justin Recla:

No, you’re right. It’s absolutely not.

Neva Lee Recla:

It’s not. And so differentiating what your mindset is around it, and it’s not bad. It’s not scary. It doesn’t have to be any of those things, but it is so silly folks, people go there to get their facts about things. People go there, you’ll click on people’s stories and stuff, and you’ll just see like a roll of like 20 columns of them just posting fake news and stuff. And even the little notification will come up like fake news. And they’re like, this is real. It’s like, dude, just stop it. So there are so many moments where it’s just like, this is funny. We shouldn’t be here right now. So I think it’s clear what your mindset is around it, and it doesn’t have to be big, bad, or scary.

Justin Recla:

I like that. You’re right. It doesn’t have to be big, bad, and scary. And you’re absolutely right. We get to make a choice. And I want to dive into this after the break with your mom here on understanding what the container and things like Facebook and Instagram are and what they are and that they’re not a true depiction of reality. But before we do that, we’re going to go on a break, and we’re going to give you an option here because I know it’s like, well, where do you go then?
