He works with athletes and professional sports teams and has built an empire of impact through his understanding of mind, body, and spirit. Tune in to know who Chris Duffin is and how to live better through strength.
Justin Recla:
Welcome back to Incorporating Superpowers. Today, we are going to be talking about living life, living a better life through strength, right? This is something that’s really near and dear to my heart. And I’ll be honest. When I first saw the images and the website of my guest today, Chris Duffin, I realized that this was somebody that I needed to talk to, somebody that I wanted to share his message. Because I could tell from just his journey, the books that he wrote, the businesses that he’s built, the strength that he’s built, that this was somebody who understands the walk, who understands balance. And Chris has a story to share. I know he’s working on a documentary that he’s building around his life and his life story. That looks absolutely amazing. I actually just signed up for notification from the YouTube channel to get notified when the show goes live. And I think you are all in for a treat, the conversations that we’re going to have here. Chris, welcome to the show.
Chris Duffin:
Thanks for having me looking forward to some good discussion today.
Justin Recla:
Yeah, this is good. Now, Chris, you’ve been in the strength-building sector, right? Bodybuilding, you’re one of the top-ranked dead-lifters in the world. But how did you get to where you were? Because you have quite the backstory, from being homeless and so forth. How did you get from where you were and the strife and the struggles that you had, to the successes that you had, not only as a weightlifter and a bodybuilder and as a strength coach, to business in itself, to what that means for you as an individual in your own personal journey? What did that walk look like for you?
Chris Duffin:
Man, well, that’s a big question there.
Justin Recla:
Well, give me the cliff notes and we can dive into the backside of the story.
Chris Duffin:
The cliff notes version is that very early in my life, I learned that being put in situations where there’s no way out, that you’ve got to adapt, ends up being addictive. You get a little stronger, you get a little bit more prepared for the next thing. And so early in my life, being homeless, dealing with murders, a serial killer, drug trafficking, living in the wilderness stuff, I was forced into those situations. But later, I took those lessons to continually compound that.
It’s just like, we know that if we go to the gym, you’re going to get a little bit more weight you can add next time and next month and so on. That over time, that you can do that. Now, if you take a year off, you move backwards. Right? And so it’s just, you don’t just sit there and beat same both in the 100-yard dash from training hard for a few weeks, this is stuff that just takes time.
And so you have to constantly put yourself in a situation where you’re taking on adversity, that you’re facing fear. That you learn to live in fear as a practice. And what I mean there is, you’re not putting yourself in a situation where you’re going to endanger yourself or die or anything like that, but going up to your comfort zone, like it’s the edge of a cliff, right? And just crawling up and reaching and peeking over and seeing where am I at today? Where’s that? Oh, there it is. And then the next day go find it again, because it’s going to be moved a little bit.
