Welcome to another episode of Incorporating SuperPowers. I’m excited for this conversation today because if you’re in a business and you’re just starting out, or you’re building a sales team, and you’re not too sure what that’s going to look like… Or maybe you’ve been selling, you’re selling your service yourself, but now you expanded and you need a team to go out there and help you get more. My guest today is Joe Beck. He is in the advertising and selling industry. He specializes in helping businesses jumpstart their sales, and that’s what we’re going to be talking about today is how to jump start your sales. Joe, thank you so much for joining me on the show today.
My pleasure, Justin. I’m looking forward to it.
So give me a little bit more background on… Well, first and foremost, how did you get started in the sales industry? How did you get started in training people in how to do this?
Sure. It’s funny, most of my work career, my professional career has been in sales and business development. Never expected to get into sales. Kind of got into sales by accident. I landed in a completely different job inside a really big company, and they saw something in me that I didn’t even know I had in myself yet, and it just kind of went from there. This is just going back to over 30 years now. I’ve spent that entire time being, number one, a student of self-development because I believe that I certainly didn’t have any all of the answers, so I was always looking to improve.
At every step of the way, I worked hard at learning what that company could offer. It just kind of developed into a 30-year sales career over time. What brought The Sales Activist brand to life was the idea that every business needs some type of activist, somebody who is solely focused on improving and turning around the sales and the business. Some businesses know who that person is, some people are looking for that person and some people have no clue. What we created was a brand that helped small businesses all the way up to medium-sized businesses to find that in themselves. It’s been a fun ride so far. It really has.
You’re absolutely right. I love that. The Sales Activist, as a brand, that is so needed, especially for businesses that are expanding and growing. When you go from a startup, where you’re the chief everything officer, and you move into the medium to emerging-size businesses, those emerging growth businesses, you have to have somebody that’s in that place. As you go up, everything else just falls off and you start missing things. If you start missing out on sales, then it doesn’t go anywhere. Just the nature of business. I absolutely love that. Before we really get into this, I wanted to explore just a little bit more about some of the things that you’re seeing in businesses. What are the biggest blockages that these businesses have? Is it just the fact they don’t have the personnel or is it the fact they just don’t have the experience or is it a combination of both?
It’s yes and yes, and I’ll tell you why. We live in a different world today. We live in a world where people are used to a webpage, a landing page, a self-activation link and entering in a credit card information to be able to complete a transaction. That’s just not professional selling. What’s happened over many, many years of this type of a world evolving is sales skills have taken a back seat, basic communication and relationship building and understanding how to build value and truly how to have a productive dialogue with a client has kind of taken a back seat to the impulse to want to go faster, quicker, automate and drive numbers. Exactly.
Click, there it is, right? Amazon’s mastered that. Amazon’s mastered that. My pastor was saying this a couple of weeks ago on stage. He was saying it’s the endorphins. It used to be you clicked the button and poof, it’s there in a day. Now they’ve changed it to where it’s buy in one click. They’ve changed the language to where it’s instantaneous. You’re absolutely right. That is not sales. That’s immediate gratification, “How much money can I get out of the person’s pocket book and into my bank account?”, rather than actual selling. My understanding of selling, and it feels like it might be yours as well, is there’s a relationship there.
Absolutely.
And that selling originates from that relationship. Like you said, we live in a world today that it’s point and click. People think that if you’re not just pointing and clicking to jump start your business, you’re not selling. A lot of people get lost in trying to figure out Facebook ads and funnels and that kind of stuff. I know there’s all sorts of different ways. I want to explore that even further on the back end because you’ve got a program called the… It’s the Annex Program. I want to go into that because I think… Stay tuned. Listen in to the second half of the show, folks, because this is going to be the meat and potatoes of some secret sauce that Joe’s doing things completely different that are going to help you jump start your sales system.
