Justin Recla:
Welcome back to Incorporating Superpowers. Today, we’re going to get a little different on this show, because I know you’ve all been watching you’ve all been listening and you know Incorporating Superpowers is all about people that are incorporating their superpowers and tapping into their own abilities, their own uniqueness to help others and do so in a different way. And my guest today is no different, but the difference between my guest today is that I know for a fact previous guests might have had this relationship, but they didn’t discuss it. But my guest today is not afraid to talk about it.
And I love it because it’s very much in alignment with the mission and purpose of what we do as superpower experts. And it’s to remind people of the relationship with the divine and my guest today just happens to do that in a very similar way in a shared fashion that I do, because we both have a relationship with Christ. And that’s how I can mean with God is through Christ. And my guest today is not afraid to talk about Jesus. He and I talk every day. Jesus, that is not Peter Lawry and I, but Peter, we’ve talked before and I love the fact that you have a God-centric business that helps people first and foremost, welcome to the show and I can hardly wait to dive down this rabbit hole with you.
Peter Lawry:
Thanks very much, Justin. It’s a real privilege to be here.
Justin Recla:
So, Peter, the business As Mission, right? That’s brand, that’s the brand that you operate under? I absolutely love it because it captures who you are and what you do. And it sums up what I believe business is about, right? Why we do business in the first place is not to make a buck, it’s to make a difference and to have an impact. So let me hear the backstory. How did you get to this place where you’ve got Jesus on your side and you’re helping other businesses focus on working as a mission to have an impact? How did that all come about?
Peter Lawry:
Sure. So I’ve actually run this as now, the fourth, fifth business that I’ve run, and I’ve experienced a number of failures in the past, in business, as well as a number of successes. And as I started this business, I had a year off where I’d actually just taken time out to get back to my relationship with God and actually make that central to my life. And my life had slowed down. And as I moved into business advisory work, which is what I’ve been doing, I had an intercessor praying for me. And I spoke to him. As I started off, he said, how’s business going? And I said it’s going really well. But you know, one thing I really don’t want to do is get so busy in business that I lose a relationship I’ve got with God. I don’t want my business to slow down.
And there was this moment where he just looked at me straight in the eye, he said, that’s the wrong comment. And I thought about it. And I thought, well, what have I said? And, and I had to prompt you. I said, well, what have I said? And he said, what if it’s not your business?
What if actually you make God the CEO of your business and you become his employee. And at that moment, there was a paradigm shift in my head, which suddenly took me into a space where I suddenly realized, oh my goodness if I work from that perspective, there is a completely different set of paradigms that work here, where instead of it being my responsibility, it becomes his responsibility. And you see, Jesus actually said, no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Apologies. Paul actually wrote that. You can’t lay a foundation other than one that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. It’s from one Corinthians 3:11. And I suddenly realize that with God in control, I could bring to my client something utterly different. You know what amazed me was that within six months of starting, I was working for an international, sorry, for a national organization within New Zealand, which is where I now live. You can tell that’s not where I come from originally, but within six months I was actually already pumping at that second across the nation. And, I stayed in the top two positions for the next four years with them. Yeah. That’s the back story.
Justin Recla:
That is the fact that you were able to get to the point where you were able to see that you put God as the CEO. I absolutely love finding other people who have reached that and they’ve come to that and recognized that it’s not your business, it’s God’s. It’s the same thing around the concept of tidying right? It’s not your money anyways. And the church teaches us that the tithe is 10 percent, but what happens when you give all of it to God?
Peter Lawry:
Yeah. That’s the challenge. That’s the challenge. Now you see I started to look at what business… What is commercial business like? What is capitalist business like? And I was quiet, I mean, it actually shook me to the core. I know that what I now teach other people is really challenging. It’s quite confronting because when you look at general business, you see it’s all about achieving results. Whereas God’s principle is about serving a purpose, business around what can I get God’s principles about what can I give? Success in business around the dollars. Whereas in God’s kingdom, it’s around significance, not success. And it’s about the people. So the profit, instead of becoming the thing we manage by, is almost the inevitable fallout of living a life in a relationship with Jesus that actually overflows with the power of the kingdom of God. And I teach people now to walk within the kingdom and to make the kingdom central in their business.
Justin Recla:
