Angela Hubbs joins host Neva Lee Recla to talk about her super powers of being Iron Man (an Ironman Triathlete) and sharing joy. Listen in as they talk about Wonder Woman, Supergirl, cats, dogs, business conferences, and all kinds of magical things.
Hi, kids. This is your Super Power Kid, Neva Lee Recla. Today I’m here with a very special guest, Angela Hubbs. Hi Angela.
Hi there.
How are you?
I’m awesome. Hanging out with Marvin and Moira … Well, Marvin.
He’s the first kitty on our show.
Love it.
Question for ya.
I’m ready for ya.
What are your superpowers?
Well my first superpower is I’m an Iron Man. Okay, so I’m going to tell you, an Iron Man is someone who can swim 2.4 miles, then bike ride 112 miles, then run a full marathon, 26.2 miles all with under 17 hours. As an Iron Man, that means I stick things out ’til the very end. That’s my first superpower.
That’s cool.
My second superpower I’d say is an ability to share joy. That’s my two superpowers. Iron Man and sharing joy.
That’s cool. All of you viewers out there, where Angela and I met was at the Speak to Impact event Red Elephants.
Did you end up naming your elephants?
Yes. This one is Afrin.
Aw. Wait, what’s the other one?
Ollie.
Ollie. Love it.
Thank you. I have another question, which is did you know about your superpowers when you were a kid?
I didn’t. Well okay. The sharing joy, yes. I didn’t know the power of sticking to something to the very end when I was a kid. It wasn’t until I was an adult and I saw the power of really seeing things to the end that I became an Iron Man. I definitely shared a lot of joy when I was a kid and it got me really far. It was that extra step of seeing things to the very end, like an Iron Man, that really had me find success in my life.
That’s cool. Did your parents help you with your superpowers?
Absolutely. My parents told me I could do anything. Not only did they tell me I could do anything, they helped … They gave me tools to do that. It’s not just, “Oh, you should go to college. You should do this. You should do that.” They were like, “Okay, great. Let’s get you to the next step.” I think it was because of them that I started to understand that you don’t just dream things. You actually have to get into action about the things that you love to do.
That’s cool. I have a question for Marvin.
Alright, Marvin. Are you ready for a question?
Marvin, what are your superpowers?
“My superpowers are sleeping all day long and meowing.”
That’s a great superpower.
Lazy kitties. That’s what they do 16 hours a day, what you see right here. This is what he does.
That’s pretty much my dog. She’ll sleep and bark.
Yeah. It’s a good life.
Yeah. Is that Moira’s superpower?
Moira likes to cuddle. She actually gets under the covers with me. That’s her superpower. She’s a cuddle master.
That’s cool.
He’s a sleep king. She’s the cuddle master.
Those are great superpowers.
I think so too. It’s so nice to come home to a kitty cuddle.
Yeah. Let me think. What is your favorite color?
My favorite color? I’m going to give you a hint.
Purple.
Purple. Purple. I love purple. Your cape is blue. I like that color blue, too.
It’s actually really, really blue, but it’s showing up on the camera like a purple.
I know. That’s why I like it.
What is your favorite animal?
My favorite animal? I have to say it’s a cat. Oh, even better, a kitten. They’re so cute. Who doesn’t like a kitten, right?
Right?
Or a puppy. Yeah, kittens and puppies. You have to be a real jerk not to like kittens and puppies.
I know, right?
Yeah.
I once went to a pet store with my friends at the mall and she let me hold one of the dogs.
Aw. You didn’t want to give it back, did you?
No.
Nobody ever wants to give back a puppy.
No, they don’t. It was so scared but it was so tiny. It was probably the size of Ollie.
Aw, puppy.
There’s also another puppy who would jump on my hand.
It jumped out of your hand or jumped into your hand?
On my hand.
Oh, jumped on your hand. Did it attack your hand?
Yeah.
That’s the best.
I used to have ranch dogs. Did you know that?
Range dogs?
Ranch dogs.
Oh, ranch dogs.
Yeah. Want to know their names?
Yeah.
Duke and Daisy.
Aw. Did they wrangle sheep and run around crazy around a ranch?
They were actually our guard dogs. They guarded our property.
Oh. See, this is what my guard cats do. If somebody were coming in and breaking in, this is what he’d be doing. Then if they came in to steal my TV, this is what he’d be doing. Not much of a guard cat.
Not much.
Nope.
Guess what Duke used to do.
What did he do?
He used to wrap around my stroller.
He’d run circles around your stroller?
He would just wrap around it and just stay.
Were you in the stroller at the time?
Yeah.
Well at least you knew where he was.
That’s a very good thing. Now Marvin, what-
Marvin, you ready? She’s going to ask you a question.
What is your favorite color?
Alright. Let’s see. He said, “Meow.” That must mean yellow.
Well that’s a great favorite color because he’s pretty much yellow.
Well exactly. Yeah, I’d say yellow is probably his favorite color.
Is his favorite animal a kitten?
No, he hates other cats.
He does?
His favorite animal is a fly. You know why?
Why?
Because he plays with it. He just chases it around crazy.
That’s my dog.
Your dog chases around flies?
Yeah. She’ll just try to bite them.
Does he ever catch it?
I think she has a couple times.
Alright. Well at least that’s one less fly in the house.
Yes. We used to have a fly invasion.
A fly invasion?
There were so many flies in our house that we had to get fly zapper.
Yeah. No, no, no. I’m not a huge fan of flies, so I’m quite happy when he goes and he gets them for me.
Are you fond of mice?
Mice are smart enough not to show up in this apartment. Do you know why? Do you know that cats actually omit a smell that keeps mice away?
What?
Yeah. Bugs, too. There’s never bugs in here because they know to stay away because of them.
That’s cool.
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
I feel like we should do a superhero pose.
Okay, I’m ready. Wait. Hang on. I’ve got to move Marvin. Move. Move. I know. Okay.
Dun-dun-dun-dun!
I love the superhero pose.
Ready? Ready?
Ready. You’re a superhero. Who’s your favorite superhero?
I’ve got to say even though I know Cathy Lee Crosby, the original Wonder Woman, I want to be Supergirl.
Oh. Why?
One, she’s super cool. Two, she has blonde hair. Three, she has so many superpowers.
Oh, that’s true. I totally want to fly. That’s my favorite. I want to fly.
I’ve had dreams where I could fly.
You’ve tried to fly?
I’ve had dreams where I could.
Oh, yeah. Me too. It’s the best. I didn’t ever want to wake up.
Yeah. I had a dream one time where there was … I don’t know what they were, but they were bad and I could fly over them.
The bad people were down here and you were like, “Suckers!” Whoosh.
Pretty much.
That’s the best.
Let me guess Marvin’s superhero pose.
You guessed it so right. Well right now his superhero pose is a little bit more dopey. That’s his superhero pose right now. His cute little dopey face.
This is my dog’s superhero pose.
He sticks his tongue out too?
Yeah, she does.
Marvin’s tongue is not out right this moment, but usually his tongue is sticking out just a little bit.
Does Marvin know any tricks? Sleeping?
No. No, this is it right here. This is it. Moira, she kind of knows tricks. Moira, come here. Come here.
One of my friends is teaching my dog how to shake.
Does he know how to shake?
Sometimes, but you have to bribe her.
Oh. “I’ve got an ice cream cone and a cookie and another treat.”
Yeah. She’ll pretty much eat anything.
Ice cube. Yeah? Your dog eat ice cubes?
Yeah. Sometimes if we drop something, she’ll eat them.
That’s the best. See, they’re the best cleaners up.
Yeah. There’s one thing that she won’t eat.
What’s that?
Raw eggs.
Raw eggs? You know what? I bet you it’s because there’s nothing to chew, right? Don’t dogs like chewing things?
Like a raw egg.
If you were to break an egg apart, it’s just an oozy mess. Well you could drink it. The dog doesn’t like to drink raw eggs?
No.
Oh, okay. Go figure.
Callie actually wants a … It was a sad, sad day for a caterpillar.
Oh, no.
Yeah.
A bad day for a caterpillar?
She almost ate it.
Oh. Was it one of the big spiky ones?
No, actually. It was small and green.
At least it was one of the small ones.
Yeah. I don’t want to call a caterpillar fat, but it was chubby and then it was yellow with spikes.
I love that you were just really nice to a chubby caterpillar. That definitely shows one of your superhero powers, that you are awesome and caring about other people, including caterpillars.
Actually, want to know my spirit animal?
What’s your spirit animal?
A butterfly.
Aw, love butterflies. They’re so pretty. You want to know my spirit animal?
Yeah.
The ocean. The whole ocean.
That’s cool. Oh, my mom just gave me a great question. What do you do in the world?
Oh, that’s a great question. I am a fitness personality. My whole mission is to have people live a life they’re excited about in a body that they love. That’s my mission on this planet.
That’s cool. I’m so excited to tell you the surprise, but I can’t.
What? I want to know the surprise!
Wait. Can I ask that one question and then can we do the surprise?
Sure.
Alright. You’ll find out the surprise. Wait, should I ask …
Alright. Two questions before we get to the surprise.
Okay. I’m ready.
I was going to make you super sad and make you think that we were going to get off, but then do the surprise thing.
You want to make me sad? I don’t like being sad.
Alright. What tips and tricks do you have for the kids watching on how they can help … How they can deal with their superpowers?
Okay, I’ve got three things.
Okay.
The first one is get really clear about what you want. This sounds really easy. You’ve got to decide what it is that you want. When you decide what it is that you want … If you like playing the … What’s this instrument? What’s this instrument? Violin.
Oh, violin.
Violin. Yeah, so if you like the violin, if you like the piano, if you like playing sports, if you love basketball, whatever it is that you love, get really clear about what it is and then go after it with your whole heart. The first one is know what you want. The second one is go after it with your whole heart. Number three, don’t let anyone stop you from doing it. Those are my three things. If you want to develop your superpowers, you’ve got to know what you want, do it with your whole self and then don’t let anyone stop you.
That’s amazing. Where can people go to find out more about Super Angela?
Super Angela! You can find me at my website, angelahubbs.com. All of my links are there. Connect with me on every social media. I love hearing people’s superpower and having them connect with me. I want to connect with everybody.
That’s cool. Alright. Do you know what time it is? Dun-dun-dun!
I don’t, but I’m ready. I’m ready for whatever you want to throw at me!
Wait. We need to dance. Alright. We’re done. Alright. It’s Funny FaceTime!
Oh, Funny FaceTime!
Make your funniest face and that will be what goes on the website for this podcast. Alright. The guest can start first. Oh, we have to do it at the same time.
Oh, at the same time? Oh, okay. I didn’t want to give away my funny face. Okay, now I’ve got to change it up. I’m ready. How’s that? How was that? Yours was great.
Thank you. Yours was too.
Alright. Marvin’s funny face.
Uh-oh.
Meow.
Oh, nice one, Marvin.
Oh I know, Marvin. I just tortured you. I know.
Alright. It’s time for …
No. No. What?
Time to go, but at least we have a cool ending. You want to say this with me?
I’m ready!
Remember kids, we all have superpowers and we can change the world!
We can change the world!
Goodbye, Angela. Thank you.
Thank you so much. You’re awesome!
Thank you.
