Are you thinking of starting a business soon? It doesn’t matter how much experience you have, or how excited you are – at some point, every new business owner thinks “who am I to do this thing?” In this episode of A Glimpse Inside, host Wendy Perrotti is joined by Kathy Moffitt to talk about how entrepreneurs can get past their doubts and keep their business growing. Kathy is a long-time entrepreneur from a family of entrepreneurs. She and her husband own two successful decades old businesses and recently started their newest company, Drink Moonshots. Listen in as Wendy and Kathy share stories of when doubts pop-up for them and what they do to get past it and keep growing.
Welcome, this is A Glimpse Inside. I’m Wendy Perrotti and today we’re starting our four part series on The Side Gig Explosion.
So many people are looking for meaning and purpose in their work. I know that I was, that’s why I got into the work that I’m doing now. I wanted something more for my life. I wanted to feel like the work that I did had an impact in the world. I wanted to feel like my time was aligned with my life’s purpose and so many other people feel that way. They’re opening businesses, they’re starting side gigs, either as additional income stream or as their primary way of earning a living.
My guest today, Kathy Moffitt, is a long time entrepreneur in a family of entrepreneurs. Her daughter is the genius behind Keeley Abigail Photography and if you have not caught this girl’s stuff on Instagram or on Facebook, look her up. The photos are creative and stunning and she’s amazing.
Kathy and her husband own two successful decades old businesses. This is a family that knows what they’re doing and they’ve been doing it for a really long time and they do it really well. Yet when she and her son John decided to start their newest company, Drink Moonshots, which is an organic, cold pressed juice company, she actually said, and I know that she said these words because she said them to me. She said, “Who am I to start a business?”
We all feel that way. The voice in our head gets in our way sometimes of our biggest dreams. Kathy moved beyond and continues to move beyond that voice and fight with it when it comes up as do I and every other entrepreneur solopreneur out there and we’re going to share that with you today so that if you’ve got an inkling that you want to do work that feels more meaningful and purposeful, if you’ve got a dream that you want to build on, we can help you get there.
So Kathy, welcome.
Hi Wendy. So happy to be here.
I’m so glad to have you on the show with me. So before we dig into all of our ugly stories and strategies for how we move beyond them, tell our listeners about Moonshots. How did you come up with the idea? What’s it all about?
I actually discovered cold press organic juicing about seven years ago. I got this book called Radical Remission and it sounds strange, but it was about how cancer survivors that were sent home to die recovered. And one of the things, the reason I picked up the book was I’ve struggled with weight and eating my whole life. I love food. I’m a foodie. I love it and appreciate it but I want it to be healthy. One of the things was juicing. They all did the juicing; 1,500 people that fully recovered, the nine common things, one was juicing.
So I bought a juicer. It was very expensive for me and I dove into it and I started reading and researching and one of the drawbacks was when I would go to stores to buy it and try it, a lot of times it didn’t taste good and I would drink it anyways for the wellness of it, the health and all that. But I love wonderful tasting things. It’s got to taste awesome.
So I started playing around the kitchen and I came up with different blends and shots and a good friend of mine said you should start a little business get like a little food truck or something. That’s how I started really looking at these blends with an eye towards offering it to people for wellness and health and every single blend tastes amazing. And because of the cold press process, it’s rich, it’s decadent, my shots tastes amazing, you want more.
That really struck me as a true foodie. I love all foods, all drinks, but this is something that I feel is like a treat. That book started me on my journey and it was just seeking something out to heal myself.
It’s crazy how that happens, right? Truly I built this business on my own journey of turning my own life around, getting my own shit together, right? Figuring it out myself and that led to something else and I think that’s the way so many people who build businesses do it.
So many people find this thing that they need or want for themselves. They solve a problem and they say, “Holy cow. I’m going to solve it for the rest of the world.”
Yeah, yeah, exactly. It’s exciting when you know you can offer something that’s going to improve their life in some way. It’s very exciting.
Yeah. I love the way that you talk about being a foodie and that it tastes good and that’s a big deal to you. I know that you know this about me. I hate shakes. I hate juices. My very best friend Mary is constantly trying to hand me these green things to drink and I can’t do it. I cannot do it because I think… And I love vegetables and I love fruits. I eat really well as a person. The liquification of stuff freaks me out and I absolutely love that you said, if we’re going to save our lives with food, let’s make it delicious.
Yes. Oh my God, yes. I know your hesitation because you look at them and you don’t want to drink them. I get it, Wendy.
Okay, so I’m going to say it. We’re going to have to take a break and just a minute, but I have to say this. I know that you’ve just getting your Instagram up and running and I don’t know if this is still on there. I hope it is because it was hilarious.
There is a video of your daughter juicing and she says, “It looks like guts.”
That sounds like her.
It’s hilarious. It’s a hilarious and I think I hear your voice being like, “Did you, was that just on the video?”
Yes.
We put that on the video that it looks like-
She does secret videoing and doesn’t tell me and then she launches it. It’s so funny.
I love it. It’s fantastic and truly though, it made me say, I want to check this out. Right. I want to taste that stuff. It sounds like it’s delicious.
All right. We need to take a really quick break and before we do and I promise it’s going to be super quick. Listeners, we’ll be back in a shot and when we come back, Kathy and I are going to dive into all that creepy stuff in our heads that gets in the way of doing this work that we’re so passionate about if we let it.
So before we take this break, Kathy, what can listeners do if they want to get their hands on some of your Moonshots?
