To assist Andrea, Wendy coaches her with some strategies on letting go of attachments to those specific outcomes, and still know that she is working toward them. Join Wendy and Andrea in today’s episode to hear tips and strategies that can help you find your focus and your follow-through.
Welcome to A Glimpse Inside. I’m Wendy Perrotti. Our friend, Andrea, is back today for her second coaching session, and we’re going to tackle one of the topics I get asked about most. Focus and follow- through. Last week we gave Andrea an experiment to get her started and let’s find out what happened. Welcome back, Andrea.
Hi, great to be here again.
So, I want to hear everything that went down with your experiment over the last week. And I want to remind you, there is no right answer. You can’t get an A on this. Truly, whatever happened there will be some great meat for us to learn from. So what do you have?
Okay. So I just started going through all my contacts on LinkedIn and started just reaching out to, at this point, old friends. I’m doing that in quotes. I mean business friends or people I’ve known forever and did business with for 20 years, and are Facebook friends now. And it’s been great. I’m trying not to expect every phone call to turn into something. But what it basically has done, is gotten me comfortable again just calling random people who used to be very close to me. And you never know where it’ll take you.
I even reached out to an old client who was working at a new company. She goes, “Thanks so much for reaching out to me. I think of you whenever I have a project, but now you’re top of mind.” So it made me realize anybody will talk to you. So this is a time, especially when people have a little more time. And I’ve been doing more video calls when people will do it because it’s fun to actually see old people, not old people, old friends. Well, we are getting old, but instead of just audio. But a lot of people are Zoomed out. But overall, it’s been a tough week, personally. Some stuff happened and the election, so I haven’t been as focused. But if I can get started during this time I think I’m going to be on a great roll.
Awesome. I love to hear that. One quick little question, as a clarifier, I noticed that you said that you worked on not worrying about the outcome of the calls. And that’s something that we talked about last time. Was that hard, easy, natural?
It’s hard because one of the people I spoke to works for a major travel publishing company, and just listening to him was like doom and gloom because their business is so awful. So here I am reaching out, and yes, it’s good to get back in touch with people. And if anything, it’s out of kindness. People like that you care about them, but sometimes it could be backward and I’m making them feel better instead of me.
So, it is hard because I really do have one end result I’m looking for. But at the same time, it’s nice to catch up with people about their lives and their children that you haven’t spoken to. So, it will work. I just have to take a deep breath a lot because it’s hard. And one of my clients cut their budget this week, so it’s just hard.
It is. It is.
But we’ll do it.
And the focus and the follow-through, the processes, and then we’re going to talk about a lot today. I opened this episode saying that focus and follow-through are some of the things I get asked about most. The most difficult thing across the board, whether I’m talking about mindset, whether we’re talking about money, whether we’re talking about weight loss, any kind of goal attainment, the most difficult thing for people is letting go of an attachment to a specific outcome. It feels counter-intuitive. It’s not the way we’ve been taught to behave. And so we’re going to carry that thread through today because you’ve got a toe in that water, Andrea, and fanning that fire is going to be really helpful for us. Sounds good?
Well, it sounds great because it’s true. You want to get off every phone call with someone saying, “Here’s a million dollars.” And that’s not going to happen, especially during these times. So it’s just, yeah, I love it. Go ahead.
All right. So for all of you out there, we’re going to take a really short break. When we come back, Andrea and I are going to dive into all of this stuff. And as always, there will be tips and strategies for you to use to help you find your focus and your follow-through. Some strategies for you to use about understanding how to let go of our attachments to those specific outcomes, and still know that we’re working toward them all the time.
