Tonya Dawn Recla:
Hello, everyone, and welcome back to The Science of Superpowers. Thank you so much for joining us again here love that you come and join us here, each and every time we bring you these fascinating episodes with these amazing guests today is no exception. Today we’re gonna be talking all about Finding a Way to Leave to Your Mark. And this conversation is super rich, I don’t even know that the title can do it justice because of the ebbing and flowing and the intersections and the connections into what it really takes to be somebody here that can find that way right that can that is willing to persevere, willing to move around, willing to climb over, willing to go under whatever it takes to get there, right to say, you know what, I’m here, I’m here. And this is how I create this is how that essence that energy, that creative element moves through me. And I get to be both the expression and the experience of that. And so, today’s guest is a brilliant, brilliant voice in that space. And we’re so excited to have him here. Chris Carlisle comes to us from the athletic space but I don’t have anything to say but like so incredibly much more than that. And you don’t, you don’t get too high levels in the athletic space without understanding human dynamics, right how we function, how we work. And so so I’m really excited for Chris to bring his wisdom to the show today and really excited to announce that his book is out Move or Die: Creating a Game-Plan from Stuck to Significance. So we’ll be talking with him all about that. Please join me in welcoming Chris to the show. Chris, welcome. Thanks for coming on.
Chris Carlisle:
Thank you, Tonya, I really appreciate the opportunity to be here. And I’m excited to talk with you and share all the experiences that we have in this, this great path we’re on.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Brilliant, brilliant, you’ve got you’ve had quite the experience. And so we’re just going to tease the audience a little bit longer. And first, I ask you, what are your superpowers? And how are you using them for good?
Chris Carlisle:
I think my biggest superpower is perseverance. And that I don’t only live it, but also teach it. And that’s one of the things that I don’t know if we have enough out there of people teaching others how to persevere through those hard times. So they’re ready for the good times to come.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
I like that well, and you and you’ve been in these fields where it shows when people don’t have it. I remember I was really fascinated with that topic a while back. And was looking into sort of a study that was done at West Point, right, they were able to predict the kind of future behavior when it came to academic performance. But what they weren’t able to sort of glean or assess ahead of time was who would see it through when the going got tough, right? And that’s kind of like the Holy Grail in recruitment, right? It’s like, like, who really has like who’s been tested, and tried and come through that fire-forged and ready to continue and who’s willing to keep doing that, right? I imagine that that was often a conversation in your space.Â
Chris Carlisle:
NFL every year has the NFL Combine, in which all the college football players come out. And they do all these tests, and they take tests for IQ and they do a lot of other tests. And they still haven’t figured out what that thing is that would allow people to persevere through hard times because there’s, there are stories and stories of great athletes who never make it because they just didn’t have the ability to persevere when they got paid a lot of money. Or they found some hard times when they had a computer they had to struggle. And you know that that point hasn’t been found yet. And so we see it everywhere around us.
Tonya Dawn Recla:
Beautiful. And as we alluded to both, Chris has been in some pretty cool spaces including winning a Super Bowl in 2014. And so we’re going to talk more about what Chris has seen and what he’s experienced and how he works with others in this space. When we come back after the break.
