Ayn Cates Sullivan:
Welcome and blessings. This is Ayn Cates Sullivan, host of the Wisdom of the Ages podcast show. So I have a treat for you today. My guest is Tonia Shimin, who has compiled and edited a beautiful book about the life and artwork of her father. It’s called The Art of Symeon Shimin, and it’s really worth checking out. It’s lovely. Lovely. I just showed my mom, who’s an artist. She loved it too. Anyway, he was born in Russia on the Caspian Sea, which I always thought sounded very exotic. But anyway, Symeon Shimin emigrated to the United States when he was 10 years old and they settled in Brooklyn, New York. He started drawing two years later and never stopped. So he illustrated over 50 children’s books, created the original Gone With The Wind movie poster, and many more works of art, including the epic 40-foot long canvas for the promotion of King Vidor’s Solomon and Sheba. So one of his most acclaimed achievements was the mural, Contemporary Justice and the Child. And so we’re going to explore a bit more about this, his work, after this ad break.
Now he has crossed on, so this book is written in his honor. And if you want to go and have a look at Symeon Shimin’s artwork, you can visit symeonshimin.com. So after this ad break, I will introduce his daughter, Tonia Shimin, and we will explore more about this man’s extraordinary life and art. So stay tuned, we’ll be right back.
