Garrain Jones went from being homeless to being a mindset guru and motivational speaker. He joins Neva Lee Recla to inspire people about the power of flow. Garrain spent over a decade jumping from one couch to another and lived out of his car for two and a half years. Even though Garrain knew deep down inside that he was meant to live a better life, he allowed his selfish ways, his ego and his pride to get in the way of reaching his dreams. He finally realized that the choices he made created the life he was living. Garrain decided that he was going to take a different approach, so he changed his mindset. Listen in as he shares how mindset and the power of flow can change the lives of many people.
Hi, kids. This is your Super Power Kid, Neva Lee Recla. And today we have a really special treat for you. Today, I’m interviewing Garrain Jones. And Garrain went from homeless and living in his car in Los Angeles. He changed his mindset, and now he travels the world helping others change theirs. So, today we’ll be talking with Garrain about the power of flow. So without further ado, will you help me welcome our very super hero guest, Garrain Jones. Hi Garrain.
Hi. Thank you so much for that warm welcome.
Well thank you so much for coming on. So what are your super powers?
Well, how many do you want me to name?
You can name as many as you want.
I have … my first super hero power is the super hero power to love people no matter what.
That’s awesome.
And then my second super power is the power of being resilient through any trial or tribulation. And another super hero power is the ability to listen to people’s desires, seek it, support it, and cultivate it to see it through. Not their needs, but their actual desires, what’s in their heart.
That’s awesome.
And I give you one more. My fourth super hero power is the ability to be 100% authentically myself.
That’s awesome. And a lot of people don’t have that super power, so I think it’s awesome especially if when people are willing to say that they have that.
Absolutely.
So, what was it like to be homeless?
You know, you can’t really see a picture while you’re in the frame, so I was numb with emotions … see, I have a different perspective now because I’m not inside of it, but while I was inside of it, I was very stressful. I was very hurt. I was very depressed. I didn’t even know why I was here on this planet, because it seemed like I had all of this talent inside but I didn’t know where to put it. I didn’t know where to put all of this energy, and I used to say, just like why am I in this? Why am I going through this? Why me? Why me? Why me? Why me?
And I just kept asking that question over and over and over, and it was like knocking on a vacant door. So the best way to answer the question that you asked is it’s like being in a crowded place with unfamiliar faces. And it was like that every single day, crying myself to sleep, wondering how I even got here. And I was just numb with emotions and I was so … it was past the point of being scared, past the point of almost every negative thing that you can think of, and I just existed in life.
That’s very … that’s interesting. I’ve never heard anyone say something like that. So how did you decide to change your mindset to now you’re living a happy life?
So, it was very interesting because I always got … anytime I’ve ever been in trouble in life, I’ve always gotten these weird signs, but I didn’t know that they were signs for me to follow when I was a little kid because I didn’t have that level of awareness. But it got to the point where what I was going through was so painful that I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. And then one day I just like, I can’t take it. Either I don’t live or I do something about it. And I remember blaming. I blamed my mom. My father was … his life was taken by two men when I was 12 years old. I blamed my dad. I blamed my mom. I blamed my girlfriend at the time.
But the one person that I never blamed was myself. I never took responsibility for everything that I said I was going to do, and then one day … it was August, 2011, at 3:43 in the morning, my window was busted out. There was like Scotch tape in this white shirt over my right window, and I just cried. I cried that I’d never cried before in my life, and I was just yelling. I was like, “Okay. Okay. I’m tired of fighting. I don’t want to fight anymore. I want to be healthy. I want to be happy. I want to be surrounded by nothing but positive people. I just want to inspire people. And I want to make a bunch of money but I want the money to represent something that I passionately believe in, that I would do for free. Just show me a sign. Just show me a sign.”
And I was crying and crying and crying, because all my life, I’ve always focused on what I don’t want. And when you focus on what you don’t want, that’s what keeps being attracted to your life. It was the first time in my life I focused on exactly what I wanted, not what my mom or dad wanted for me, not what my girlfriend, not what society, not what school, but it was me. My life, what’s in my heart, what I wanted for me, my desires. And it was the first time in my life that I ever fought for my own life. And a week later, I was at the gas station with my last two dollars. It was $4.59 to get a gallon. I only had $2 to my name, and a homeless guy walks up to me and he asked me for money. I said, “You have more money than me.” And he says, “Change your mindset. Change your life.” And he walks away.
In that moment, in that very moment … because I felt like I had been living a lie for 30 plus years until I heard that statement. Because when he said change your mindset, change your life, that was the first time I ever had a … it was like everything I ever learned was interrupted by that one word. It’s like it interrupted my thought process. Change your mindset, change your life. Change your mindset, change your life. And I just kept saying it over and over and over. Change your mindset, change your life. So if I do different with the same circumstances, my life will change? Change your mindset, change your life. And I just kept saying it. So it was like having this little angel on my shoulder, so every day from that point, it’s been almost seven years since that point, when I don’t feel like doing something, when I don’t feel like working out, I don’t feel like taking this meeting, I’ll always have that voice that say change your mindset, change your life.
Do the opposite of everything you would normally do. And I started with stairs. Normally I would take the escalators. And then I said change your mindset, change your life. And so I took the stairs. But I didn’t know that by doing the opposite, or doing different with the same circumstances would have me go into a different direction in life, because most people, they carry out the same patterns over and over and over. It’s like a hamster in a cage going back and but it was the first time in my life that I was like, “Wait.” And so within six months of doing the opposite, I was not … there’s no possible way you’re the same person. If you’re driving down the street and you make a left on the same road every time, you’re going to go down the same street.
Exactly.
But if you make a right, you do the opposite; you’re going to go to a different destination.
Exactly.
I’ve accumulated every single day the opposite of everything that I would normally do in areas where I wasn’t happy. Well, the opposite of sad is what?
Happy.
Happy. And so my life is literally the philosophy of change your mindset, change your life. My book is coming out based off of everything that I learned while literally transforming my mind, but I didn’t know that that’s what it was doing, but I kept getting new results every time I did something different. So that’s how it was birthed.
Well, that’s awesome. I would love to hear more about that but before I do, we need to take a quick break.
Okay.
